Job description

Company Description

IREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference.

IREN’s platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across the U.S. and Canada.

Job Description

The DC Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for managing the on-site delivery of mechanical works during the construction phase of IREN’s next-generation, renewable-powered data center projects. The role ensures that cooling systems, chilled-water and condenser-water systems, HVAC equipment, pumps, piping networks, heat rejection equipment, ventilation, water treatment, drainage, controls interfaces, and associated mechanical infrastructure are installed, tested, commissioned, and handed over safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, regulatory requirements, and the operational needs of high-performance compute environments.

This role contributes to the successful delivery of IREN’s Spain data center projects by supervising mechanical contractors and subcontractors, coordinating equipment installation and mechanical work sequencing, managing interfaces with electrical, CSA, controls, utilities, commissioning, vendors, and operations teams, monitoring quality and safety performance, resolving field issues, and ensuring that mechanical systems are completed to support reliable, efficient, scalable, and resilient mission‑critical cooling infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the General Superintendent, the DC Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for:

  • Manage the on-site execution of mechanical works by coordinating cooling systems, chillers and/or heat rejection equipment, pumps, heat exchangers, chilled-water and condenser-water networks, HVAC systems, ventilation, piping, valves, water treatment, drainage, insulation, controls interfaces, and associated mechanical infrastructure to ensure safe, timely, and high-quality delivery of data center facilities.
  • Supervise mechanical contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and site teams by monitoring progress, productivity, manpower, equipment, materials, work fronts, installation standards, and adherence to approved construction schedules, drawings, method statements, installation procedures, and execution plans.
  • Coordinate mechanical interfaces with electrical, CSA, architectural, utilities, BMS/controls, fire protection, commissioning, operations, consultants, and equipment vendors by aligning sequencing, access, equipment installation, penetrations, supports, power and controls requirements, testing, inspections, start-up, and handover activities.
  • Review and implement mechanical construction documentation by checking drawings, specifications, P&IDs, RFIs, shop drawings, coordinated layouts, method statements, inspection and test plans, equipment data, permits, quality records, and site instructions to ensure compliance, constructability, coordination, and traceability of mechanical works.
  • Manage mechanical system completion and testing activities by coordinating pressure testing, flushing, cleaning, chemical treatment, leak testing, equipment alignment, balancing, insulation inspections, system filling, pre‑functional checks, and other activities required to prepare mechanical systems for start‑up and commissioning.
  • Monitor quality, safety, and environmental performance by supporting inspections, audits, toolbox talks, lifting and installation reviews, NCR resolution, snagging, risk assessments, corrective actions, and mechanical testing to ensure compliance with project, regulatory, manufacturer, and IREN standards.
  • Identify and resolve mechanical site issues, constraints, clashes, deviations, and coordination risks by assessing impacts on cost, schedule, quality, safety, constructability, commissioning, cooling performance, energy efficiency, reliability, and future operations, and by escalating critical matters for timely decision making.
  • Support testing and commissioning readiness by coordinating equipment inspections, pre‑functional checks, flushing and cleaning completion, vendor start‑up activities, controls readiness, system turnover, punch‑list closure, documentation, and interfaces with the commissioning team to ensure mechanical systems are ready for functional and integrated testing.
  • Support project controls and reporting by providing progress updates, lookahead planning inputs, productivity information, risk and issue updates, change inputs, equipment and material delivery status, testing and flushing status, commissioning readiness, inspection status, and handover documentation for mechanical packages.
  • Promote continuous improvement and effective site coordination by sharing lessons learned, strengthening construction routines, supporting collaboration across disciplines, and ensuring alignment with IREN’s sustainability, reliability, scalability, water efficiency, energy efficiency, and high‑performance infrastructure standards.
Qualifications
  • At least 8–10 years of experience in mechanical construction management, site supervision, field engineering, or mechanical installation delivery, preferably within data centers, mission‑critical facilities, industrial infrastructure, energy projects, process facilities, or other large‑scale technically complex construction environments.
  • Degree or technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Construction Management, Building Services Engineering, or a related technical discipline; relevant certifications in construction safety, HVAC, mechanical systems, site management, quality, commissioning, or project management are well regarded.
  • Strong technical knowledge of data center mechanical infrastructure, including cooling systems, chilled‑water systems, heat rejection equipment, chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, piping and valves, HVAC and ventilation systems, water treatment, drainage, insulation, mechanical controls, and BMS interfaces.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical construction‑phase delivery, including contractor supervision, field coordination, equipment installation, piping fabrication and installation, method statements, inspection and test plans, pressure testing, flushing and cleaning, water treatment, quality control, HSE requirements, schedule control, change management, commissioning readiness, and handover documentation.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and challenge mechanical drawings, P&IDs, schematics, specifications, shop drawings, coordinated layouts, RFIs, equipment submittals, schedules, testing records, commissioning documentation, and technical submissions with strong attention to constructability, maintainability, system performance, interfaces, redundancy, and operational readiness.
  • Familiarity with relevant mechanical and building services codes and standards, pressure systems requirements, environmental requirements, fire and life safety considerations, data center construction practices, mission‑critical cooling concepts, redundancy strategies, water efficiency, energy efficiency, and sustainability objectives.
  • Experience coordinating major mechanical equipment vendors and packages such as chillers, cooling towers or dry coolers, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling equipment, packaged cooling systems, and water treatment systems, including installation, inspection, testing, start‑up, and commissioning interfaces.
  • Fluent in English. Hands‑on, organized, proactive, and results‑driven profile, with strong leadership, communication, coordination, problem‑solving, planning, negotiation, documentation, and decision‑making skills, and the ability to manage multiple contractors, vendors, energization activities, and work fronts in fast‑paced site environments.
