Mar Recruitment & Consulting seeks a Chief Engineer to lead the Engine Department aboard a merchant vessel. You will manage the engine team and resources, ensuring safe, efficient operations and compliance with permits to work and safety standards.

You will supervise maintenance planning, dry docking prep, electrical work over 1000V, bunkering, and environmental controls, while driving personnel development and adherence to CMS and safety practices.

Responsabilidades

  • Manage engine department personnel and resources for safe and efficient operation
  • Enforce safe working practices and permits to work
  • Oversee maintenance planning, dry docking prep, and PMS management
  • Approve and supervise electrical work on systems (1000V+ training)
  • Oversee bunkering operations and fuel optimization
  • Assign tasks and supervise engine crew performance
  • Monitor environmental compliance and oil pollution control
  • Ensure crew safety and adherence to PPE and CMS procedures
  • Lead handovers with relieving Chief Engineer and comply with charterer requirements
  • Develop crew training, welfare, morale and discipline

Descripción del empleo

As the highest technical authority in the Engine Department, your main duties will include:

Management:Safe and efficient management of engine department personnel and technical resources.

Safety:Compliance with safe working practices, enforcement of BSM's safe manning levels of the engine room, and the issue and enforcement of appropriate Permits to Work.

Maintenance:Maintenance of technical installations and equipment, as well as the development and control of maintenance plans and dry docking preparations.

Electrical Systems:Approval and supervision of work on electrical systems (special training and qualification is required for work on electrical systems over 1000V).

Bunkering:Preparation and performance of safe bunkering operations.

Task Assignment:Assignment of tasks to engine department personnel and supervision in consultation with the Second Engineer.

Environmental & Pollution Control:Control and monitoring of oil pollution prevention equipment including the OWS, ensuring correct entries in the Oil Record Book Part 1, managing standing orders for sewage and incineration equipment, and controlling portable pipes, hoses, and pumps.

Hot Work:Control and enforcement of Hot Work Procedures.

PMS Management:Management of the Planned Maintenance System, including timely ordering of stores through requisitions, updating of job status, machinery records and documentation, and the follow-up and closure of maintenance tasks.

Resource Optimization:Efficient and economical use of fuel, lubricating oil, and stores.

Role Specifications & Acts As

During your time onboard, you will act as and ensure the following:

Member of the Ship Safety Committee.

Deputy Environmental Officer on board.

Designated Asbestos Management Person on board.

Role model for leadership and exemplary personal conduct.

Behaviour Based Safety Observer.

Personnel Development:Manage the engine department personnel appraisal process, provide training to engine crew (including junior engineers, Cadets, and engine trainees), and look after personnel welfare, motivation, morale, and discipline.

UMS Operations:Overlook Unattended Machinery Spaces (UMS) operation.

Crew Safety:Ensure crew compliance with safe working practices including the correct use of PPE at all times, contribute to and promote environmental compliance, contribute to ship security, and speak up if/when unsafe practices or conditions are identified.

Safety Practices:Ensure Behaviour Based Safety practices are followed in the machinery spaces.

Requirements

Ensuring an adequate quantity and quality of bunkers and fresh water when preparing passage and voyage plans.

Monitoring work and rest hours of Engine department personnel.

Issuing clear instructions to the engine crew, including Standing Orders.

Thorough Handover:Executing a complete handover with the relieving Chief Engineer, including the examination of engine and deck machinery, reporting of any defects to BSM, and fulfilment of charterer's requirements.

Valid Chief Engineer Unlimited License and fully up-to-date STCW/Medical credentials.

Proven experience in the rank within the merchant/commercial maritime sector.

Familiarity with the requirements of the Competency Management System (CMS).

Ability to carry out survey work in accordance with Class Society regulations.

Deep familiarization with the condition of the hull and machinery.

Commitment to promoting good working and social relationships on board, forming part of the emergency response team, and reviewing BSM's SMS and EMS periodically to report suggestions.
