Job description

Shine is the financial copilot for entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Founded by serial entrepreneurs Rico Andersen and Martin Hegelund, Shine is a leading European fintech unicorn on a mission to restore the joy of running a business, by ending wasted time on financial admin. Shine offers a connected solution for invoicing, accounting, payroll, business accounts, payments, and financing, meaning business owners can focus their energy on growing a healthy business, not held back by manual admin.

Part of something bigger

Today we're part of Cegid, a European leader in cloud software for finance and accounting. Together we're building Europe's leading financial copilot for small businesses and their accountants. Shine already supports more than 400,000 small businesses. As part of Cegid, we now reach over one million small businesses and 15,000 accountants across Europe. We're a multicultural team working from France, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, contributing to a wider European network that spans Spain, Portugal.

Your hiring experience matters

Just as we respect our customers' time, we respect yours. Your experience with Shine and Cegid should feel simple, transparent and genuinely supportive. If this sounds like somewhere you want to grow, we'd love to hear from you.

Banking Tribe at Shine

Banking Engineering at Shine covers a wide scope: core financial infrastructure, customer-facing banking products, onboarding and compliance flows, and the operational systems that keep everything running reliably. The teams here work on problems where correctness, reliability, and regulatory expectations are not secondary concerns.

As Shine grows across Europe, the Banking organisation is evolving to support more markets, more complex products and regulatory requirements, and higher expectations around reliability, scalability, and operational control.

Your Role as VP Engineering, Banking

Reporting to the Senior VP of Engineering, you'll build and lead the engineering organisation behind Shine's banking technology: secure, reliable, and held to the standard expected of a modern financial institution. You'll partner closely with Product, Compliance, Risk and Security so that engineering practice supports product innovation and regulatory obligation at the same time.

The Banking Tribe is close to 100 people including Product and Design, spanning core banking, cards, customer lifecycle, fraud and AML and the full customer experience interacting with the banking products.. You'll lead the engineering side of that through a team of engineering managers, and help shape the broader global engineering strategy beyond it.

Two things will define your first year. The organisation has grown quickly and delivery predictability has not kept pace: planning, communication and operational maturity all need to catch up with the size of the org. At the same time, Banking is expanding into new markets, so you'll be building for passporting and multi-market operation while the existing business keeps running.

What you'll do

Lead the organisation

  • Lead and develop the Banking engineering organisation through your engineering managers, and build the bench beneath them.

  • Design the organisation, operating model and resource plan as the business grows, and hire the people it needs.

  • Set a culture of ownership and accountability where teams are trusted to decide and held to their outcomes.

Raise the bar on delivery and operations of our products

  • Make delivery predictable and transparent: better planning, clearer communication, documentation people actually use.

  • Strengthen engineering operations across incident management, monitoring, observability and alerting, and the reliability that follows from them.

  • Keep technical debt and operational risk as deliberate choices rather than accumulated surprises.

Own engineering in a regulated business

  • Partner with Compliance, Risk and Security so regulatory obligations are designed into how we build, not audited in afterwards.

  • Balance speed against governance, and be the person who can defend where that line sits to a product leader and a regulator alike.

  • Become the technology partner the banking business relies on for its most significant initiatives.

Shape what comes next

  • Contribute to Shine's engineering strategy and technology roadmap.

  • Advise senior leadership on engineering priorities, organisational development and where to invest.

  • Partner with Product leadership so engineering execution lands on customer and business outcomes.

Location: We are flexible. You can work hybrid from one of our hubs (Barcelona, Madrid, Porto, Paris, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Berlin). Travel bi weekly, roughly 2 days. 3 days in office a week

About you

What you'll need

  • Significant experience leading a multi team engineering organisation through engineering managers, within a licensed financial institution: a bank, neobank, payments institution, or banking-as-a-service provider.

  • You have owned systems where money moves and correctness is non-negotiable (ledgers, payment rails, reconciliation), under genuine supervisory scrutiny: AML and KYC, fraud, PSD2, audits, direct regulator engagement.

  • A track record of building high-performing teams through coaching and organisational design, and of raising the bar on reliability and delivery practices.

  • Credibility with executive stakeholders, and real partnership with Product, Security, Compliance and Risk. In banking these are not functions you route around.

  • You've led engineering in a cloud-native environment where teams own what they run: CD, TDD, and the engineers who built a service on call for it in production. If your experience sits in a legacy estate, you were the one modernising it.

Nice to have

  • SEPA and EU payment rails, multi-market passporting, or scaling an organisation through a licence application or regulatory expansion.

  • Leading a team through a post-merger integration or large-scale organisational change.

What success looks like after six months

The organisation trusts you.

Your managers feel supported and your senior engineers bring you the hard problems rather than routing around you. You know where the talent and the gaps are, and you've acted on at least one of the gaps.

Compliance, Risk and Security treat you as a partner.

You've been through at least one real regulatory or security decision with them, and both sides came out of it trusting the other's judgement.

Operations and delivery have moved, not just been assessed.

You can describe our operational strengths and weaknesses with evidence. At least one meaningful improvement is live and holding, whether in incident management, reliability, or how teams plan and communicate their work. Stakeholders have noticed the difference.

The organisation has a direction and the first move is made.

You've proposed where the engineering organisation needs to go structurally, secured agreement on it, and started the first change. The team can describe that direction back to you.
