Job description

Help shape the future of Quantum Technologies

Are you driven by working with cutting-edge photonics technology that powers the future of Quantum Technologies? Do you want to be at the forefront of shaping the next generation of laser systems used in quantum computers, sensors and communication systems?

Do you find complex technical challenges exciting and enjoy transforming advanced scientific concepts into scalable, high-performance laser system solutions? Are you motivated by pushing the boundaries of today’s technology through innovation, R&D, and advanced photonics?

If so, this opportunity at Hamamatsu Photonics may be exactly what you are looking for.

About the Company

Formerly known as NKT Photonics, Hamamatsu Photonics now serves as the Lasers & Fibers Business Unit within the Hamamatsu Photonics Group, following its acquisition by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. in 2024 and subsequent rebranding in 2026.

Today, Hamamatsu Photonics combines decades of expertise in advanced fiber lasers and specialty fibers with the global strength of one of the world’s leading photonics companies. Its technologies enable innovation across quantum technologies, medical and life science, semiconductors, aerospace and defence, and industrial applications.

Being in the middle of the second quantum revolution, this is an exciting time to join a growing organisation that continues to invest heavily in both technology and people. You will become part of a highly skilled team of scientists and engineers developing advanced laser systems that enable the next generation of quantum computing and sensing technologies.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Specialist part of the Koheras Engineering Team, you will lead the development, assembly and testing of customised laser systems and prototypes based on ultra-stable fiber laser technologies. You will join a highly specialised Quantum Systems team of approximately 20 engineers and scientists, many of whom hold PhD-level qualifications within physics, photonics and laser technologies. The organisation is continuing to grow and offers a unique opportunity to join during an exciting scale-up phase.

Working closely with customers, you will take ownership of complex projects and translate highly specialised quantum application requirements into robust, innovative and technically advanced laser system solutions. This is a highly technical R&D-focused position with significant influence over future technology development, system architecture, IP generation, and customer-driven innovation.

In this role you will:

  • Capture customer requirements within quantum computing and quantum sensing applications.
  • Develop a deep understanding of customer systems, challenges and technology roadmaps.
  • Translate application requirements into advanced laser system specifications.
  • Lead the development and implementation of highly specialised fiber laser systems.
  • Drive R&D activities related to next-generation quantum laser systems.
  • Contribute to new technology development, IP generation and patentable ideas.
  • Support complex system-level discussions with leading quantum technology customers.
  • Support and inspire the development of advanced electronics control systems.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to deliver technically strong and customer-relevant solutions.
  • Lead technical work packages and guide multidisciplinary project teams.
What you will be working with in practice

Your work will involve advanced technologies including:

Light Generation
  • Optical amplifiers
Light Processing
  • Frequency conversion
  • Acousto-optical modulation
  • Electro-optical modulation
Light Delivery
  • Photonic Crystal Fibers
  • Advanced fiber-based optical platforms
Quantum Applications
  • Quantum Computing
  • Ion Trapping
  • Atom Interferometry
  • Photonic Quantum Computing
Profile

You are likely an experienced Quantum Technology Specialist, Photonics Engineer, Optical Engineer, Laser Systems Engineer or Physicist who combines deep scientific understanding with the ability to transform complex quantum technology requirements into practical engineering solutions.

You may come from an industrial quantum technology environment, advanced photonics, laser systems engineering, or a research-heavy technical environment where you have worked close to real-world quantum applications.

Desired Experience

We hope you can tick most of the following boxes:

  • PhD within Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Several years of experience with photonics-based quantum applications.
  • Experience within quantum computing, quantum sensing or related technologies.
  • Ability to translate quantum application requirements into laser system specifications.
  • Strong understanding of lasers, light amplification, frequency stabilisation, non-linear optics, frequency metrology, frequency combs and photonic integrated circuits.
  • Experience with electro-optical and acousto-optical technologies.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience within free-space and fiber optics.
  • Experience managing multiple technical projects simultaneously.
  • Experience leading technical work packages or multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Programming experience, ideally Python.
  • Fluent English skills, written and spoken.
  • Willingness to travel internationally up to approximately 10% annually.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Thrives on solving highly complex technical challenges
  • Is curious, innovative and passionate about emerging technologies
  • Takes ownership and drives projects independently
  • Enjoys working in multidisciplinary environments
  • Can communicate complex technical concepts clearly
  • Is structured, organised and quality-focused
  • Has the ability to balance innovation, scientific depth and practical engineering realities
