Job description

Quantum Engineer

We are a pioneering deep-tech startup at the front ... ...ment and analysis. By joining our team, you will be part of a dynamic and ambitious group that is not just building a product, but pushing the very limits of what is scientifically possible.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Quantum Engineer to join our dedicated quantum team. This is a hands-on, experimental R&D role focused on advancing our state-of-the‑art quantum sensing technology. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the design, construction, and optimization of our core optical setup. This position is ideal for an individual who thrives on complex challenges and is passionate about conducting fundamental research in a fast‑paced, industry‑leading startup environment. Your primary objective will be to help unlock the next level of sensitivity for our instrument, contributing directly to a groundbreaking project.

Key Responsibilities
1. Optical System Development & Optimization
  • Take ownership of the development of our high-resolution optical microscope.
  • Design, build, align, and maintain complex optical setups involving lasers, mirrors, active optical elements, and high-quality imaging systems.
  • Utilize optical simulation software (e.g., Zemax) to design and validate new optical pathways and microscope configurations.
2. Experimental Execution & Data Analysis
  • Conduct sophisticated quantum measurements on diamond-based sensors, including magnetic field measurements.
  • Develop and implement novel experimental protocols to enhance instrument sensitivity and performance, with the goal of achieving a 100-fold improvement.
  • Perform offline data analysis on large datasets using Python or MATLAB to interpret results and guide further development.
3. System Integration & Troubleshooting
  • Work collaboratively within a small team to ensure seamless integration of optical, electronic, and software components.
  • Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex physical effects and technical issues within the experimental setup to ensure measurement stability and accuracy.
  • Contribute to the overall system architecture, understanding every component's function and its impact on performance.
Qualifications & Experience
  • A Master's degree or PhD in Physics, Quantum Optics, Atomic Physics, or a related field. Candidates with exceptional Master's-level research experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrable hands‑on experience working in an experimental physics lab, particularly a quantum optics laboratory.
  • Proven expertise in building and aligning complex optical systems, including experience with free-space optics, lasers, and mirrors.
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis using Python or MATLAB for research‑grade applications.
  • An inquisitive and proactive mindset, with the ability to question assumptions and independently investigate solutions to complex problems.
  • Experience with one or more of the following is a significant advantage:
  • Optical design and simulation software, especially Zemax.
  • Experimental systems involving cold atoms, trapped ions, or Nitrogen‑Vacancy (NV) centers.
  • High-resolution microscopy and low‑aberration imaging techniques.
  • Active optical components such as Acousto‑Optic Modulators/Deflectors (AOMs/AODs) or Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs).
  • Microwave electronics and control systems.
Ideal for someone that want to:
  • Build the Unprecedented: This is not just another engineering role. You will be a key contributor in the quest to build the most powerful magnetic microscope in the universe, directly pushing the boundaries of scientific measurement.
  • The Best of Both Worlds: Enjoy the intellectual freedom and excitement of PhD-level research while benefiting from the pace, resources, and career opportunities of a well-funded deep-tech startup.
  • Own Your Impact: In our small, agile team, you will have significant ownership and influence over the core technology, seeing your ideas progress from simulation to a tangible, world-leading instrument.
