Job summary

Maersk is seeking a Product Controller to join the Copenhagen team within Risk & Product Control. This role offers hands-on exposure to daily P&L, valuations, and trading exposures across physical and derivative positions in commodities.

You will partner with traders and risk teams, contribute to month-end close and reporting, and help automate reporting and analytical models. A couple of years in Product Control or a similar function is ideal in a trading environment.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience in Product Control, Market Risk or similar trading support.
  • Understanding of commodity trading economics within energy, metals, or other markets.
  • Knowledge of P&L, mark-to-market valuation, exposure management and hedging.
  • Familiar with physical and derivative trading environments.
  • Advanced Excel with data-handling capabilities; experience with BI/SQL/Python is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and validate daily P&L across physical and derivative positions.
  • Perform P&L attribution and explain key performance drivers.
  • Prepare daily position and exposure reports with trading activity.
  • Support valuation, IPV and month-end close processes.

Product Controller - Commodities & Energy Trading

Risk & Product Control | Maersk Oil Trading

At Maersk, we are rethinking how energy is traded, managed and consumed across our global operations. Maersk Oil Trading manages an expanding portfolio of marine fuels, distillates, crude, and emerging low-carbon alternatives such as methanol, LNG and biofuels, traded across Copenhagen, Singapore and the Americas.


The Product Control team is the custodian of traded P&L, providing transparency over trading economics, market exposures and performance drivers. We are looking for a Product Controller to join our Copenhagen team and take ownership of a range of activities spanning daily P&L, valuations, exposure reporting and business partnering with the trading desks.


This role is ideal for someone with a a couple of years' foundation in Product Control, Market Risk or a similar trading support function who is ready to deepen their expertise in commodity trading.


You will join a highly experienced team, gain direct exposure to physical and derivative trading, and have the opportunity to broaden across products, regions and a rapidly evolving energy landscape.


While experience within energy markets is advantageous, we are equally interested in candidates from other commodity sectors or trading environments who bring strong technical fundamentals, curiosity and a desire to learn.


Key Responsibilities

Daily P&L and Exposure Control


  • Produce and validate daily trading P&L across physical and derivative positions in fuel oil, gasoil, crude and alternative fuels.

  • Perform detailed P&L attribution, analysing and explaining key performance drivers and market movements.

  • Prepare and review daily position and exposure reports, ensuring accuracy and alignment with trading activity.

  • Communicate P&L and exposure insights clearly to traders, Risk and management.


Valuation and Market Assurance


  • Apply and validate forward curves, spreads and differentials used in the valuation of trading positions.

  • Support accurate mark-to-market valuation of physical and derivative portfolios.

  • Perform independent price verification (IPV) and support month-end valuation activities.

  • Contribute to valuation approaches across both established and emerging fuel products.


Control, Reporting and Continuous Improvement


  • Maintain the integrity of reported P&L, exposures and valuations through robust controls and reconciliations.

  • Investigate and resolve data and reporting issues in collaboration with Product Control, Risk and IT teams.

  • Support month-end close and reporting processes.

  • Identify opportunities to improve, automate and streamline reporting, analytical models and operational processes.


Business Partnering


  • Build strong working relationships across Front Office, Operations, Market Risk and Finance.

  • Partner with traders to understand trading strategies, exposures and commercial performance.

  • Provide analysis and insights that support decision-making across trading activities and strategic projects.


What We're Looking For

Experience & Technical Skills


  • 2-5 years of experience in Product Control, Market Risk, Middle Office or a similar role within a commodity or financial trading environment.

  • A good understanding of commodity trading economics, ideally gained within energy, metals, agriculture or other traded products.

  • Understanding of trading P&L, mark-to-market valuation, exposure management and hedging concepts.

  • Familiarity with physical and derivative trading environments.

  • Advanced Excel and strong analytical and data-handling capabilities.

  • Exposure to Power BI, SQL, Python or ETRM/CTRM systems would be advantageous.

  • Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering or another relevant discipline is beneficial but not essential.
