Job description

At Fluor, we are proud to design and build projects and careers. We are committed to fostering a welcoming and collaborative work environment that encourages big-picture thinking, brings out the best in our employees, and helps us develop innovative solutions that contribute to building a better world together.

Job Description

We are seeking a Principal Process /Specialty Engineering with substantial Life Sciences experience to provide process engineering support for feasibility studies and concept designs for new facilities and retrofits. This client-facing technical leadership role requires the ability to work effectively with limited and evolving information, guide multidisciplinary teams, and represent Fluor confidently during early project engagements.

The position serves as the primary technical interface among clients, discipline engineers, project management, vendors, contractors, and external specialists, ensuring alignment of technical scope, decisions, and deliverables throughout early project development.

You will join the Project Development Studio (PDS), a worldwide team of subject matter experts within Fluor’s Advanced Technology & Life Sciences Business Line. PDS delivers up to fifty early-phase projects annually across life sciences, advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, data centers, and battery manufacturing.

Candidates must demonstrate recent, hands‑on experience developing process engineering deliverables for Life Sciences facilities and translating process requirements into integrated conceptual designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of process engineering design basis from first principles, including process definition, process flow development, utility demand determination, equipment sizing philosophies, production modelling, mass balances, and support facility integration. Define study objectives, evaluate alternatives, and lead the delivery of feasibility and concept studies.
  • Coordinate process scope and resolve technical interfaces across architectural, HVAC, building services, electrical, controls/automation, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Develop process models and phase‑appropriate deliverables, including process descriptions, schematic flow diagrams, block flow diagrams, process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, production schedules, process studies, capacity analyses, utility summaries, raw‑material summaries, and waste summaries.
  • Develop integrated equipment diagrams (IED), utility flow diagrams, utility and off‑sites design bases, and utility‑equipment sizing bases to support facility layouts, general arrangements, and multidisciplinary design development.
  • Work closely with architects and multidisciplinary teams to arrange and size equipment in accordance with process, operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop phase‑appropriate priced equipment lists, equipment cost estimates.
  • Support control system/automation estimates with high‑level instrument list and I/O counts.
  • Define facility and service scope and provide technology‑platform assessments and option comparisons.
  • Analyze complex design challenges, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical, inherently safe solutions.
  • Plan and execute process engineering tasks in accordance with contract requirements, project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Prepare and deliver client presentations and develop technical and project‑execution content for proposals.
  • Support business development and estimating activities, including equipment pricing and pursuit strategy, to secure new PDS projects.
  • Maintain relationships with external consultants, industry organizations, contemporaries, and clients.
  • Share advanced process‑engineering practices, capture lessons learned, and mentor and coach.
Basic Job Requirements
  • Accredited four‑year engineering degree, or global equivalent, and 20 years plus of relevant experience.
  • Substantial experience delivering front‑end process design in the Life Sciences sector.
  • Proven ability to lead complex feasibility studies, master plans, concept designs, and basis of design assignments.
  • Must have personally developed and/or directed the preparation of front‑end process engineering deliverables, including:
  • Proven ability to define process architecture and facility operating philosophy including material flows, personnel flows, process segregation strategy, utility concepts, batch and continuous manufacturing strategies, waste handling philosophy, logistics concepts, and facility expansion strategies.
  • Elevated technical knowledge in one or more Life Sciences manufacturing sectors and the ability to learn related technologies quickly.
  • GxP competence and familiarity with FDA, EMA, MHRA, and equivalent global regulatory codes.
  • Competency and familiarity with relevant industry guidelines such as ISPE Baseline Guides and Good Practice Guides and ASME BPE.
  • Experience incorporating process safety principles and inherently safe design from the earliest project stages.
  • Proficiency with BlueBeam and Visio or comparable drawing software; experience with SketchUp or other layout‑visualization tools is beneficial.
  • Proficiency with Aspen, Intelligen, Witness and/or equivalent process simulation software.
  • Strong client‑facing communication, presentation, technical writing, and business writing skills.
  • Ability to create high‑quality technical content and constructively review process designs and deliverables.
  • Ability to manage personal schedule and workload, use initiative, and operate effectively in a flexible environment with limited and evolving information.
  • Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary design activities and resolve scope and interface issues across project phases.
  • Working knowledge of engineering calculations, procurement, equipment design, construction, commissioning, start‑up, turnover, sequencing, and project interfaces.
  • Ability to travel periodically to other Fluor offices, client sites, industry events, and professional gatherings.
  • Knowledge of the Danish Life Sciences market.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Authorization to work in Denmark or another appropriate EU work permit.
  • Working knowledge of at least one AI platform
Preferred Qualifications
  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional registration.
  • Broad project‑lifecycle experience beyond front‑end development, including detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, start‑up, and turnover.
  • Demonstrated success converting client relationships and technical strategy into winning proposals and new project opportunities.
  • Experience mentoring process engineers and sharing technical knowledge across global teams.
  • Active participation in relevant professional organizations, conferences, trade shows, or industry working groups.
  • A strong network within the Life Sciences engineering and manufacturing community with Denmark and Scandinavia.
