Job summary

DTU Energy in Denmark invites applications for a PhD position in the HealBat project team to develop a novel potassium-sulfur solid-state battery with self-healing capabilities. You will conduct hands-on synthesis and electrochemical characterisation, collaborating with computational and international partners.

The role involves experimental characterisation of solid-state electrolytes, assembly/testing of K-S cells, and contributing to modelling, publications, and international exchanges.

Qualifications

  • MSc degree in a related field.
  • Experience with electrochemical characterisation techniques such as impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic cycling.
  • Experience with solid-state materials synthesis and structural characterisation (XRD, SEM).
  • Interest in battery materials, solid-state electrolytes, and energy storage.
  • Experience with solid-state battery assembly/testing is an advantage but not required.
  • Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment with Experimentation and modelling.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Synthesize novel K-ion-conducting solid-state electrolyte materials using solid-state, hydrothermal, or sol-gel methods.
  • Characterize electrolyte structure, composition, and morphology using XRD, TEM/SEM, XPS, NMR, and Raman spectroscopy.
  • Measure ionic/electronic transport properties via electrochemical methods including EIS and chronoamperometry.
  • Assemble and test symmetric K|SSE|K cells to study interfacial stability and degradation.
  • Study interfacial evolution using CV, galvanostatic cycling, EIS, and potentially GITT, with post-mortem and operando analysis.
  • Investigate self-healing behavior via recovery protocols guided by modelling.
  • Assemble and evaluate full K-S solid-state battery prototypes focusing on cycling stability, rate capability, and retention.
  • Contribute to a three-month research stay at an international partner institution (e.g., TUM).
  • Disseminate results through publications and conferences.
