Job description

Join our frontend team as a Frontend Engineer student assistant and help build the tool that runs DFDS freight operations.

Do you want to work on a modern Next.js codebase with real users, real data and a team that cares about how things are built? Are you looking for a student job where you actually ship to production instead of maintaining someone else's side project? Then you could be the newest addition to our Control Tower frontend team.

Be part of the movement, and play your part.

About the role

Control Tower is the internal platform our operations teams use to run freight on DFDS ferry routes: customer setup, bookings, preparing shipments for departure, tracking cargo in transit and closing things off afterwards. It is replacing a legacy system from the 90s, so there is plenty of room to do things properly and to make a visible difference for the people who use it every day.

We are a small frontend team in Copenhagen working closely with a product designer and several backend teams. We own a Next.js monorepo and the internal component library it is built on, and we ship often. You will be a real part of that team, not a spectator: you will pick up features, get code review from experienced engineers, and see your work land in the hands of operators within days.

Main responsibilities
  • Build and improve frontend features in our Next.js / TypeScript monorepo, from UI components to data fetching and state
  • Turn designs from Figma into accessible, well-structured React components using our in-house design system (Navigator)
  • Contribute to the design system itself: components, documentation and small fixes that help the whole team move faster
  • Write tests and help keep the codebase clean, typed and easy to work in
  • Take part in code reviews, planning and refinement together with the rest of the team
  • Ship often: you will push code to production regularly and get feedback from real users
About you

We think the strongest teams are built on diversity and inclusivity. Contrasting opinions, varied skills and strong characters bring out the best in us all.

With this in mind, we think that the ideal person for this position will bring some of the following:

  • You are enrolled in a relevant education (software development, computer science, datamatiker, web development or similar) and have at least a year left of your studies
  • You have written real frontend code, in study projects, side projects or a previous job, preferably with React and TypeScript
  • You know your way around HTML, CSS and the browser, and you care about the details: layout, accessibility, keyboard navigation, loading states
  • Familiarity with Next.js, Tailwind, TanStack Query or testing libraries is a plus, not a requirement. We will teach you our stack
  • You are self-organised, ask questions when you are stuck, and like taking ownership of a task from start to finish
  • You are comfortable working in English (the team is international)
Our stack
  • TypeScript, React, Next.js (App Router), Tailwind, TanStack Query and Table
  • pnpm and Turborepo monorepo, Navigator (our in-house component library), Figma
  • GitHub, Vercel, Sentry, Grafana, Microsoft Entra ID for authentication
What's in it for you?
  • The best of both worlds: a modern frontend stack and startup-like pace, backed by a leading international shipping company with more than 150 years of experience
  • A frontend team that takes craft seriously, with senior engineers to learn from and a lead who has time to mentor
  • Real impact: the features you build are used by operations staff every day
  • Agile working culture with flat hierarchies in a cross-functional team
  • Competitive compensation with opportunities to grow beyond a pure student role
  • Flexibility to accommodate exams and study periods

Be a valued member of a diverse team at DFDS and help drive change together.

While you're with us, we want you to develop. At DFDS, we believe that development happens first and foremost through activities in the workplace. We will also offer training courses that can support you in your role, if needed.
