  • The trading terminal: A dense, real-time, multi-monitor web application used by the desk throughout the trading day.
  • Scheduling and settlement: Nominations, schedules and cash-flow reconciliation against TSOs and exchanges.
  • Quant tooling: Data pipelines and a backtesting framework used to research and validate new strategies.

Job description

Aarhus Trading is a proprietary trading company active in the European power markets. We trade intraday, day-ahead and auction products across the Nordics, Central and Western Europe, and Great Britain.

Everything we trade on runs on software we build ourselves. A small team owns the whole platform end to end: market data ingestion from exchanges, TSOs and forecast vendors, the order management and algorithmic execution engine, scheduling and nomination towards TSOs, the P&L and cash-flow systems, a quant research and backtesting stack, and the trading terminal our traders sit in front of every day.

We are looking for an experienced developer who wants to own real systems, close to the traders who use them, and see the effect of their work the same day it ships.

What you will work on
  • Trading and execution: The order management system and intraday trading algorithms that place and manage orders on Nord Pool, EPEX and other exchanges in real time.
  • Market data and integrations: Ingestion from ENTSO-E, exchanges, more than twenty European TSOs and commercial forecast providers. REST, SOAP/XML, message queues and websockets are all part of daily life.
  • Platform and security: The infrastructure the rest runs on, including identity and access, secrets management, and network boundaries.

You will not be confined to one of these. We are always looking to expand our trading operations, and we are sure to add more software and tooling over time.

Our stack
  • Backend: Kotlin, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB, RabbitMQ, gRPC and websockets.
  • Frontend: React and TypeScript, D3, real-time updates over STOMP.
  • Data and quant: Python, Polars, Delta Lake.

You do not need to know all of this. You need to be strong in at least one area and comfortable picking up the rest.

What we need from you

We are a small team. There is no ticket queue handed to you, no separate QA department, and no ops team on the other side of a wall. That means we need people who:

  • Are self-sufficient: You can take a loosely defined problem from a trader, work out what actually needs to be built, build it, test it, ship it and support it in production.
  • Have solid engineering experience: At least three to five years building and running production systems. We are interested in building systems that are both performant and reliable.
  • Are comfortable with concurrency and real-time systems: Order flow, market data and algorithms all run continuously during the trading day. Latency, correctness and failure handling matter.
  • Care about correctness in data: Time zones, daylight-saving transitions, quarter-hour and hourly products, decimal money and as-of/point-in-time semantics are everyday concerns, not edge cases.
  • Communicate clearly: You will talk directly with traders, understand what they need and in collaboration define the tasks that need to be implemented.
  • Take ownership: When something you or others have built breaks, you fix it, learn from the it, and help mitigate the issue, so it doesn’t persist going forward.

Experience with power or financial markets and/or having a background IT securityis a strong plus but not a requirement. Curiosity about how the markets work is.

What we offer
  • Real ownership: You will own whole systems, not a slice of a service. Decisions on architecture, tooling and priorities are made by the people doing the work.
  • Short distance to impact: Your users sit a few metres away. A feature shipped in the morning can be trading by the afternoon.
  • Fair compensation: We pay competitively for experienced people and expect to be measured against the market.
  • A small, senior team: No layers of management, no process for its own sake, and colleagues who are strong in their own right.
  • An office in the heart of Aarhus C: We sit together in the city centre, a short walk from the station, cafés and the harbour.
  • A domain worth learning: European power markets are complex, fast-moving and increasingly important. Few places let you work this close to them.

If you have any questions regarding the job, feel free to reach out at any time, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
