Job description

Barley Breeder
Sejet Plant Breeding
Do you want to help create the agricultural crops of the future?
The Company

Sejet Plant Breeding is a Danish breeding company located in Sejet, near Horsens, Denmark. We employ approximately 40 permanent staff and operate breeding programmes in barley, wheat, triticale, and faba beans. Our varieties are marketed both in Denmark and internationally.

Sejet Plant Breeding is jointly owned by DLG Group and Novo Holdings and has been developing crop varieties since 1947. We offer excellent, modern facilities covering all aspects of plant breeding, including our own DNA and quality laboratories, as well as extensive facilities for field trials and seed multiplication.

The Position

As a Barley Breeder at Sejet Plant Breeding, you will work closely with an experienced breeder and share responsibility for the continued development of our European barley breeding programmes. While spring barley is the largest cereal crop in Denmark, winter barley plays a significant role across European markets, and you will be actively involved in the development of both programmes.

Plant breeding is a highly diverse and rewarding profession. Your work will range from making crosses in the greenhouse, evaluating breeding material in the field, and analysing grain quality in the malting laboratory, to defining long-term breeding objectives and strategies.

Malting quality is a key focus area within our breeding programmes, and our ambition is to remain among the leaders in this field. We therefore expect you to have a strong interest in new knowledge and research related to malting quality and other aspects of barley breeding, working closely with our Research Team. DNA-based breeding, including marker development and genomic selection, is also carried out in collaboration with the Research Team and is extensively integrated into the breeding programme.

As a Barley Breeder, you will collaborate closely with colleagues across the laboratory, research, field operations, technical teams, and other breeders. You will also interact externally with universities, other breeding companies, and stakeholders throughout the agricultural and malting industries. While many tasks are completed in close cooperation with others, there will also be days when you are expected to work independently in the field.

Our primary markets for barley breeding are Denmark, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. The role therefore includes some travel to trial sites and partners in these countries. In addition, we utilise an off-season nursery in New Zealand for the spring barley programme, which includes an annual visit for evaluation and selection of breeding material.

Your Profile

You hold a PhD in Biology, Agronomy, Plant Science, Genetics, or a related discipline, and you have a solid understanding of plant genetics and statistics.

As a person, you are curious and motivated by exploring complex challenges to identify new solutions and opportunities. You work systematically and purposefully, while maintaining a clear focus on the development of successful commercial varieties. At the same time, you are a collaborative and enthusiastic team player with a positive approach to both teamwork and everyday challenges.

Plant breeding is a long-term product development process, where the results of today's decisions may not become visible for many years. Therefore, it is important that you are dedicated, persistent, and motivated by creating long-term value.

The role of Barley Breeder carries significant scientific, strategic, and leadership responsibilities. We are therefore looking for a candidate who is confident in making decisions and taking responsibility for both programme development and team success, in close collaboration with your breeding colleague.
