Jobbeschreibung
Ihr Profil

The art of measurement made in Germany. Striving to perfect it is the mission of the 2100 employees of PTB the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. As Germanys national metrology institute and a leading center of research we operate in an international environment to develop world-class measurement standards. We at PTB work to ensure that people and organizations can trust the measurements they use.

At our Braunschweig site we are looking to fill the following position in Department 4.5 Applied Radiometry:

Scientist (f/m/d) with a PhD in Physics Electrical Engineering or Optical Engineering
Remuneration Group 14 TVöD Bund fixed contract until 30. June 2029 Full-time

Ihre Aufgaben / Responsibilities

You will support Working Groups 4.56 Metrology for Quantum Communication and 4.34 Frequency Distribution via Optical Fiber at the interface of quantum communication and frequency metrology. Your responsibilities include:

  • Further development of technical solutions for noise reduction on fiber links e.g. phase/frequency noise polarization drift and dispersion and loss management to stabilize the distribution of high-fidelity entanglement.
  • Leading contributions to the establishment of new experimental and software-based capabilities including automated data acquisition calibration routines and simulation/emulation frameworks as well as their integration into existing activities.
  • Scientific responsibility for the substantial further development of the NQL research infrastructure in collaboration with ongoing projects along with support for the users of the testbed.
  • Foundational work on multi-party scenarios such as interference channels with two receivers or network topologies with multiple communicating parties as contributions to the advancement of the Niedersachsen Quantum Link 2.0.
  • Investigation of applications and protocols on the NQL fiber link that directly benefit from entanglement distribution (beyond QKD) including the identification of particularly promising near-term use cases.
  • Identification of future research directions that leverage entanglement as a resource beyond QKD e.g. for distributed sensing time/frequency and synchronization services or certified random-number generation.

Ihr Profil / Your profile

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in physics electrical engineering optical engineering or a related field
  • Practical experience in at least one of the following areas: quantum optics / entanglement sources and detectors fiber links and their stabilization time and frequency transfer quantum communication protocols low-noise measurement and control techniques photonic integration
  • Experience with laboratory automation and data analysis e.g. in Python or MATLAB; knowledge of FPGA or embedded control systems is an advantage
  • Ability to translate innovative concepts into robust practical systems
  • Commitment and strong experimental skills
  • Independent structured and goal-oriented scientific working style
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • German language skills (B1 level) and English language skills (B2 level)
  • A valid drivers license (Class B) is beneficial
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally

Wir bieten / We offer

Become part of QuantumFrontiers 2 and actively shape the further development of entanglement distribution across optical fiber. This position will help translate fundamental concepts into practical network technologies, working in close interaction and with high visibility in the collaborative interdisciplinary regional research environment as well as with national and European partners.
