A leading university in Germany is seeking a candidate for a W3 Professorship for German Linguistics / German Grammar. Responsibilities include representing the linguistics of the German language in both research and teaching, with an emphasis on German grammar and systemic linguistics. Candidates should have excellent research credentials, experience in securing funding, and will engage in academic self-administration. The following position is to be filled in the Department of German Studies at Trier University as a permanent civil servant (“Beamtenverhältnis auf Lebenszeit”), starting 1 October 2026:
W 3‑Professorship for German Linguistics / German Grammar (LBesG) (m/w/d)
If the legal requirements for civil servant status are not met, employment may be possible under a private contract. The professorship involves representation of the designated field in both research and teaching.
The successful candidate will represent the linguistics of the German language across the entire spectrum, both in theory and empirical research, in teaching and research, with a focus on German grammar. Excellent research activities in one or more areas of systemic linguistics are required, particularly in orthography and graphematics. Additional expertise in language dynamics, language varieties, and/or language acquisition is desirable. Active participation in humanities research networks at the University of Trier is expected, especially concerning topics related to the Trier Center for Language and Communication (TCLC) and/or the Trier Center for Digital Humanities (TCDH). Further, experience in academic self‑administration and extensive experience in securing third‑party funding, preferably within collaborative projects, are expected. Since the Trier Department of German Studies trains a high number of prospective teachers (Grundschule, Realschule Plus, Gymnasium), relevance and connectivity to this area are essential.
The official duties are defined in § 48 HochSchG. Appointment requirements follow § 49 HochSchG. The ability to offer courses in German is expected.
