Kleinanzeigen is seeking a Tech Lead to steer a newly formed team building an intelligent campaign delivery system at scale. You will own architectural direction from ideation to production and collaborate with product, engineering, and architecture to balance speed and quality.

The role requires leadership in backend development, experience with Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot, event-driven architectures using Kafka, and proficiency in data persistence across SQL/NoSQL.

Job Description

We are looking for a Tech Lead (d/f/m) to join a newly assembled team that is part of a new initiative at the heart of our Kleinanzeigen strategy: Give users, who pay to promote their listings, the best possible value and insight. For this to work, we have the exciting challenge to build an intelligent campaign delivery system at a massive scale - an opportunity that is rare to find in Germany. You will own the technical direction from ideation and experimentation through to a production ready service.

Your profile

• You have designed and implemented scalable, low-latency distributed backend services at Kleinanzeigen's traffic scale
• You have previously led backend development in cross-functional agile teams
• Tech Stack:
• Strong backend engineering skills in Java or Kotlin, with extensive hands-on experience in Spring Boot
• Proven expertise in building event-driven systems using technologies such as Kafka
• Strong proficiency designing data models and persistence solutions using SQL and NoSQL databases
• Your ownership does not end at implementation: You also master deployment (e.g. Github actions), Infrastructure (e.g. Terraform) and Monitoring & Observability (e.g. Grafana)
• You are able to find the right balance between quality and speed of delivery as well as manage technical debt
• A growth mindset: you can navigate a system whose architecture is still evolving, make confident decisions under uncertainty, and bring others along
• Strong communication skills in English. German is a plus.
• Nice-to-have:
• Experience with search concepts is a plus (e.g. inverted indices, analyzers, tokenization, and ranking)
• Understanding of campaign delivery concepts is a plus: campaign lifecycle, impression/click tracking, pacing, auction mechanic, AdTech
• Data Engineering experience is a plus (Airflow, Databricks, DBT, Python)

Job responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and set the architectural direction for the system, from campaign ingestion through retrieval, auction, and serving
• Collaborate with the product manager, engineering manager and architect to translate business requirements into sound architecture decisions, with explicit trade-offs and potential migration paths
• Translate system designs into tangible work streams with estimates and lead the implementation (including hands-on coding)
• Mentor and grow the engineers on the team by conducting code reviews, setting quality standards, coaching and leading by example
• Identify and resolve technical bottlenecks, including operational concerns like SLOs and incident response for a new service
• Participate in agile ceremonies and contribute to shaping the team's ways of working, including optimizing the way to work with AI
