Job Title: Systems Triage Engineer
Job Description
The Systems Triage Engineer evaluates performance data and test results from on-road and simulation testing to identify issues, uncover root causes, and provide actionable feedback to development teams. This role blends traditional embedded systems triage with advanced analysis of simulation data and counterfactual scenarios, focusing on large-scale, safety-critical autonomous driving systems. You will play a key role in improving software quality, supporting AI model training, and enhancing the overall safety and reliability of autonomous trucks and related platforms.
Responsibilities
- Perform triage, tracking, and metric reporting for system anomalies and test escapes across embedded and autonomous driving systems.
- Leverage 3D visualization tools to analyze sensor data, including lidar and other ADAS-related inputs, to uncover complex software and hardware issues and identify root causes.
- Report on software quality using concepts such as defect ratios and software heatmaps to provide clear visibility into system performance and maturity.
- Analyze autonomous vehicle behavior from public road and closed-course testing, including events such as misrouted software, missing lane lines, and obstacles in front of the vehicle.
- Use simulation tools to identify new edge-case scenarios and export them into datasets to help expand and improve reinforcement learning and training models.
- Perform counterfactual simulations of selected events and share critical analysis with Safety, System V&V, and Machine Learning teams to mitigate unsafe system behaviors.
- Collaborate on tooling requirements for efficient triage, root cause analysis, metric reporting, and data visualization to rapidly extract insights about software maturity.
- Maintain and optimize the defect management process and workflows, ensuring high-quality bug ticketing that accurately reflects defect states and priorities.
- Track and follow up on high-priority and blocking defects, ensuring continued progress and clear communication with stakeholders.
- Support a rapid integration and deployment schedule to enable consistent software stack releases to extended testing teams.
- Work closely within the triage team and collaborate cross-functionally with development, safety, V&V, ML, and automation teams to provide a swift feedback loop.
- Support first-level triage by determining what happened during events, classifying issues, and identifying whether they are software, sensor, or system-related.
- Conduct second-level, deeper investigations into issues to determine root causes, validate fixes, and support ongoing testing activities.
- Support startup and deployment of software at the start of test days when needed, helping ensure trucks and systems are ready for scheduled operations.
- Provide triage support aligned with vehicle schedules, including daytime, late-night, weekend, and overnight operations, to ensure continuous flow of information from trucks to triage and development teams.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering, or a related technical field.
- 3–5+ years of industry experience leading test programs with a focus on system triage, defect tracking, and impact analysis.
- Experience with complex embedded systems, including ADAS technologies such as autonomous driving software architectures, sensors, networking, compute hardware, and control systems.
- Hands‑on experience with software development tools such as build systems, containers, and source control.
- Experience working with software for real‑time or safety‑critical systems.
- Experience with machine‑learned software components and AI‑driven features.
- Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to learn quickly and operate effectively in unstructured and evolving technical environments.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced setting with rapidly changing software and hardware infrastructure.
- Experience with ADAS, sensors, embedded software, and autonomous or automotive systems.
- Experience using issue tracking tools such as Jira for defect and workflow management.
- Ability to interpret and analyze ROS logs or similar robotics system logs.
- Experience with first‑level triage of software issues, including classification and initial assessment.
- Experience performing deeper root cause analysis on complex system issues, particularly in autonomous, automotive, or heavy truck environments.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience testing autonomous vehicles, ROS‑based robotics systems, or ADAS features.
- Familiarity with configuration management of safety‑critical systems and systems engineering principles.
- Understanding of verification and validation methodologies for complex, safety‑critical systems.
- Experience designing and commissioning custom hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) test fixtures.
- Experience in public road forensic analysis of robotic disengagements or similar safety‑critical incident analysis.
- Experience working with large‑scale, safety‑critical systems and software development processes in complex environments.
- Comfort collaborating across Safety, System V&V, Machine Learning, and core development teams.
- Interest in and enthusiasm for working with cutting‑edge AI technologies and training AI models for autonomous driving.
Work Environment
This role supports autonomous truck and advanced ADAS testing in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment. You will work closely with on‑road testing operations, simulation teams, and core engineering groups, frequently interacting with data from heavy trucks operating on public roads and closed‑course environments. The position requires working on‑site at the Fort Worth office at least a couple of days per week, or as needed, to be available for real‑time issues encountered by drivers and the automation team on the trucks. The schedule aligns with truck operations and includes shift work to cover different times of day and week, including daytime, late‑night, weekend, and overnight operations. Typical shift coverage includes a second shift (approximately 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and a night shift (approximately 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.), with flexibility required to support changing test schedules. You will work with modern software development tools, 3D visualization platforms, simulation environments, and sensor data systems, contributing to a collaborative, technology‑driven culture focused on innovation in autonomous driving and AI model training.
