Job Overview

Become a Reading Assist Fellow and spend a school year of service working with struggling readers in some of Sussex County's highest needs schools.

Reading Assist Fellowship is an AmeriCorps program that requires 1200 service hours to be completed between August24,2026 and June30,2027.

Responsibilities

Fellows provide foundational reading instruction to students in kindergarten through fifth grade who face significant reading challenges. Fellows will:

• Work with 9–18 students for 30–45 minutes each day (1:1 or 2:1 sessions).
• Teach foundational reading skills to students who struggle to read through traditional classroom education.
• Prepare lesson plans tailored to the individual needs of each student.
• Work with a Program Manager to provide individualized instruction.
• Meet with the Program Manager regularly to discuss the implementation of intervention and student progress.
• Monitor student progress and input data.
• Communicate with the Program Manager, school liaisons, and Reading Assist staff members in a timely and professional manner.
• Maintain records as required, including student attendance and AmeriCorps service hours.

Fellows work within the school environment and are supported by a Program Manager for feedback and biweekly visits.

Commitments

• Commit to a school year of service from August24,2026 to June30,2027, serving Monday–Friday from approximately 8a.m.–3:30p.m. in one Reading Assist partner school.
• Attend the 4‑week in‑person training starting on August24,2026 Monday to Friday 9:00a.m. to 3:30p.m.
• Work with children in K–5, including those who may have behavioral challenges in addition to academic needs.
• Become an integral member of the AmeriCorps community and participate in all AmeriCorps trainings, events, and projects.
• Attend all Reading Assist training sessions and events.
• Engage in peer‑to‑peer outreach, attend recruitment fairs alongside Reading Assist staff to share your experience as a Fellow as part of professional development.
• Follow your assigned school’s schedule, including school breaks and holidays.

• Must have a computer (laptop, tablet, or desktop).
