DESY invites undergraduate students in physics or related disciplines to participate in a 7.5-week summer research program at the Hamburg or Zeuthen sites. Participants join active research groups to work on detectors, data analysis, software, or theory, with lectures conducted in English.

The program runs 21 July to 10 September 2026, with a 39-hour week, free hostel accommodation, and partial travel cost reimbursement.

The 2026programme will take place from 21July - 10September 2026.

Each summer DESY offers undergraduate students in physics or related disciplines (such as scientific computing and engineering) the opportunity to obtain first-hand research experience ata large international laboratory.Students are invited for an 7.5week training period to experience research in one of the various fieldspursued atDESY:

• Photon science
• Accelerators
• Elementary particle physics

Selected candidates will join in the day-to-day work of research groups at the DESY laboratory in Hamburg or Zeuthen (close to Berlin).Research projects can be categorised into different types of activities: practicalworkon detectors or experimental equipment,physics data analysis, software development, theory and scientific computing. The students willgain first-hand experience in independent research, collaborating with established scientists who are experts in their fields. While the research project will be the focus point, there will also be a series of lectures (given in English) tailored towards the key topics of DESY research. Visits to the accelerators, experiments and computer centre are also part of the agenda. Summer students are expected to work 39 hours per week (including project work and lectures). They will get DESY Hostel accommodation provided free-of-cost during the full programme period. The students will receive a salary of 28,50 Euro per day and at least partial reimbursement of travel costs. Further details of the regulationscan be found in the FAQ .
