The Children’s Society is seeking a creative writer and empathetic listener to join our Storytelling Team. You will gather powerful stories from young people using a trauma-informed approach and help amplify their voices across campaigns and content. The role emphasizes collaboration with multiple teams to inspire social change.

As Story and Voice Specialist, you will empower young people to share experiences confidently while maintaining safety and respect. Occasional travel may be required.

Contract: 12 month fixed-term contract

Part time:21 hours per week

Location:Flexible within the UK(remote, hybrid or working from our London Old Street office or one of our regional offices). Occasional travel will be required.

Salary: £18,360 (21 hour week, pro-rated from £30,600)

Flexible workinghours: 8─4, 9─5, 10─6 or in between (agreed with your manager)

About the role
We are looking for a creativewriterandempathetic listenerto join our passionate, dynamic teamwho’sexcited about participation.This role will embed and amplify the voice of young people acrossourcommunications.Working closely with our colleagues in youth impact, youth voice, creative, fundraising, campaigns and others across the organisation, you will gather powerful and compelling stories from those with lived experience, using a trauma informed, person-centred approach.

This role sits within our Storytelling Team within our Social Impact Domain which works to engage our audiences and inspire social change across society. As an experienced Story and Voice Specialist, your role will be to empower children and young people and others to become storytellers, supporting them to be comfortable, confident and in control of sharing their experiences.

The stories we tell are vital to achieving our mission, helping to change social attitudes and urging people to take action with young people, by offering their time, their money or their voice to our cause.

Skills and competencies

In order to be successful in this role:

  • You have experience conducting sensitive trauma-informed interviews with young people and adults
  • You are skilled at writing long-form stories that focus on the storyteller leading the narrative in their own words.
  • You’ll be eager to amplify stories with our colleagues across the organisation, stewarding the content through campaigns, web and social content, and much more.
  • You’re plugged in to contemporary storytelling techniques and have an ear for a great narrative.
  • You'll have the ability to build relationships quickly and warmly to ensure trust.

Interviews: Interviews will be held in two stages. The first round will be held over w/c 5th October 2026 and w/c 12th October 2026. The second round will be held with young people shortly afterwards.
