Job description

Join our team as a dedicated scientist and contribute to our exciting research projects. Our work focuses on models and algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learning. We devise deep learning models, which find application in image-based science, including in collaboration with domain scientists on and off campus in fields such as remote sensing, microscopy of cell colonies, plant sciences, healthcare, and MRI imaging. Our mission is not only to create accurate solutions but also to quantify model uncertainties, analyze robustness, reliability, and trustworthiness of AI models, and develop methods for explainability of AI solutions.

As part of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to develop novel learning methods, investigate the application and adaptation of foundation models, devise efficient training schemes for large models on high‑performance computers like JUWELS and JUPITER at the Jülich Supercomputing Center. If you’re passionate about AI research and eager to make a real‑world impact, we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities
  • Work on a wide range of computer vision and machine learning methods and applications focusing on the aspects outlined above, inspired by the needs of societally relevant applications such as from neuro‑ or plant sciences.
  • Advance our understanding of the underlying theory, and its applicability to scientific applications, where explainability, interpretability, and reliability are as important as high accuracy.
  • Supervise student projects at BSc, MSc, and PhD level.
  • Work with experts at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) to run your algorithms/tools on large distributed computer systems.
  • Write reports and research articles, grant proposals, and regularly participate in international conferences to present your own work.
Profile
  • Master with subsequent PhD degree in computer science (or a related field).
  • Rich experience in devising machine learning models, methods, and algorithms for computer vision and image processing.
  • Scientific track record with publications at internationally renowned venues in machine learning.
  • Solid mathematical background and distinct analytical and numerical skills.
  • Solid programming skills (e.g. Python, C++).
  • Excellent ability to cooperate with other sciences and to work as part of a diverse team, interdisciplinary and cross‑topical thinking.
  • Very good communication skills.
  • Very good English, both spoken and written. German language skills are not necessary but a plus.
  • High motivation and work ethics.
Offer

We work on the very latest issues that impact our research field and society, and offer the chance to help shape their future! We support you with:

  • A world‑leading, interdisciplinary and international research environment, providing state‑of‑the‑art experimental equipment and versatile opportunities to grow as a curious researcher.
  • Comprehensive training offers and individual opportunities for personal and professional development.
  • Very good conditions for work‑life balance and a family‑friendly corporate policy.
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to partly work from home.
  • Full‑time position, with the option of slightly reduced working hours, and 30 days of annual leave.
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service.
  • Exploration and preparation of next career opportunities supported by our Career Center & Postdoc Office (www.fz-juelich.de/careercenter).

We offer an exciting and varied role, which is initially for a fixed term of 2 years. Salary and social benefits are in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD‑Bund), pay group 13, depending on the applicant’s qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks assigned to them, including Christmas bonus payment and social insurances (health care, unemployment, pension scheme etc.). Please see the overview of benefits at Forschungszentrum Jülich here: go.fzj.de/benefits. All information about the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD‑Bund) can be found on the BMI website: go.fzj.de/bmi.tvoed.
