Sr. Software Development Engineer, Aurora Open Source Engines

Amazon Aurora is a MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible relational database service that combines the speed and availability of high‑end commercial databases with the simplicity and cost‑effectiveness of open source databases. Both the Postgres and MySQL versions of Aurora are built on some of the most active code bases in the open source community.

We have challenging problems to solve in distributed systems, concurrency, database internals, caching, query optimization, languages, and performance engineering.

The Amazon Aurora Engines team is looking for experienced software engineers in the Engine development team. We are seeking talented experts who are excited about building large‑scale database systems that run across thousands of servers across multiple data centres worldwide. These are core development positions where you will own the design and development of significant system software components critical to our industry‑leading database services designed for the cloud.

Key job responsibilities

• Solve challenging technical problems, often ones not solved before, at every layer of the stack.
• Design, implement, test, deploy and maintain innovative software solutions to transform service performance, durability, cost, and security.
• Build high‑quality, highly available, always‑on products.
• Research implementations that deliver the best possible experiences for customers.
• Participate in design discussions, code review, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Work cross‑functionally to help drive business decisions with your technical input.

Qualifications

• Experience as a mentor, tech lead, or leading an engineering team.
• Experience leading the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems.
• Experience in professional, non‑internship software development.
• Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object‑oriented design.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.
• Experience with the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
