The Role

You’ll build the autonomy brain for a cutting‑edge autonomous aerial platform, integrating state‑of‑the‑art reinforcement learning agents into the operational systems of our Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV), the CA‑1 Europa, part of the Centaur project. Working at the intersection of machine learning and systems engineering, you will integrate RL agents into high‑performance runtime systems to enable real‑time autonomous decision‑making in flight.

• Autonomous decision‑making systems – reliable pipelines from sensor data to RL inference to tactical execution, including edge‑case and failure‑mode handling.
• Reinforcement learning integration – bridging Python‑based RL agents with Rust runtime systems for low‑latency, reproducible inference.
• Distributed systems & communications – handling intermittent connectivity and bespoke hardware protocols.
• Training infrastructure – distributed training, evaluation pipelines, and large‑scale runs on custom simulators.

The Day‑to‑Day

• Maintain our existing Rust and Python software stack, working with internal and external customers to identify issues, improve operational reliability and performance, and reduce technical debt.
• Develop tests and benchmarks at the micro and macro levels, including hardware‑in‑the‑loop simulations and flight testing.
• Review code contributions, proposals, and RFCs from colleagues, ensuring robustness and adherence to safety and performance standards critical for airborne applications.
• Propose and implement new features, capabilities, algorithms, infrastructure, or full products across our stack with a focus on reliability of airborne mission systems.
• Mentor teammates and help support our interviewing pipeline.
• Share knowledge through tech talks, learning groups, and topical office hours.

You Should Apply If

• Can write legible, maintainable, and performant code.
• Communicates well in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Enjoys collaborating with others, including code reviews and pair programming, especially on complex system architectures involving tight hardware‑software integration.
• Is comfortable working asynchronously.
• Has strong backend or embedded development experience, ideally in Rust, Go, or C++.
• Feels comfortable working with Python in the ML‑heavy parts of the stack.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Rust and Python specifically.
• Deploying reinforcement learning or machine learning agents in real‑world systems.
