eBay is expanding its Shipping Domain engineering hub in Germany. We are hiring a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to join the Global Shipping team in Dreilinden, Berlin area, building shipping products used by millions of buyers and sellers.

You will lead server-side development with Java/Spring Boot, define technical roadmap, mentor engineers, review designs, and ensure high-quality code, tests, and scalable architectures while collaborating with product managers.

About the team and the role

We are in the process of expanding our engineering hub in Germany. Several new engineering positions are being opened within Shipping Domain in our Dreilinden office located in the greater Berlin area. We are looking for a Senior Staff Backend Engineer who will be part of the Global Shipping team and who can help us build exciting products at eBay. Every day, millions of users sell and ship their wares using eBay. Our team supports this diverse community by building shipping products around the globe, helping individual sellers and small businesses to meet the growing expectations of online buyers. We are a product-oriented team, we move fast, and stay curious. You will be working on new experiences for millions of customers. You will lead the development of modern web applications (based on Spring Boot) by developing system designs, helping define the technical roadmap, guiding the team on all technical aspects, and implementing code. You will report to a Sr. Manager of engineering, as well as work closely with the wider engineering team of the new engineering hub. It’s a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative, transparent and highly technical team culture. eBay requires employees to be present in the Dreilinden office three days per week.

What you will accomplish

Translate product problems into designed cross-component solutions; author design documents and technical specifications for key projects. Lead and own architectural decisions, drive system-level innovation, and influence technical direction beyond your immediate team. Define and uphold engineering standards, coding guidelines, and technical culture; contribute meaningfully to the roadmap by surfacing investment opportunities, flagging risks, and shaping sequencing decisions. Mentor engineers across levels through design reviews, pairing, and structured feedback to raise the team's overall technical capability. Develop and maintain scalable server-side applications in Java/Spring Boot; write clean, efficient code and conduct code reviews to ensure quality and consistency. Collaborate with product managers and engineers to break down work into milestones, deliver features, and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests while resolving performance bottlenecks.

What you will bring

Bachelor’s in CS or related field with extensive experience in designing and developing highly scalable web applications in Agile/Scrum environments with modern CI/CD practices. Proven experience building scalable backend systems with Java/Spring Boot; familiarity with Kotlin and Prometheus Query Language is a plus. Experience building RESTful APIs, event-driven systems, and microservices architectures. Proficiency with relational and/or NoSQL databases and writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) to boost engineering productivity is a strong plus. Experience influencing technical direction and mentoring engineers to raise the team’s overall capability.
