We are seeking an experienced Senior Python Engineer (m/f/d) to join our Supply Division. In this role, you will take ownership of core backend systems that power our network planning optimization product. Your work will directly impact the scheduling of vehicles, drivers, and timetables, ultimately enhancing travel experiences for millions of passengers while driving the profitability of our operations. You will be integral to building and maintaining an advanced optimization platform that addresses diverse use cases, including vehicle and driver scheduling, timetable optimization, and more. The platform employs modern system design principles such as Domain-Driven Design, Hexagonal Architecture, and SOLID principles, ensuring scalability, maintainability, and high code quality. Your responsibilities will include developing APIs, data pipelines, and infrastructure that connect the optimization algorithms—created by our Operations Research Engineers—to the broader system landscape. Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in integrating artificial intelligence capabilities, combining large language models with our optimization engine to pioneer innovative planning solutions. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you will ensure seamless system integration and uphold best practices in software development.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong academic background in Computer Science or a related field, complemented by at least five years of professional experience in backend software engineering with Python. You should have hands‑on experience with modern front‑end technologies, enabling you to contribute to some front‑end tasks as needed. Deep understanding and practical application of clean architecture principles such as hexagonal architecture, ports‑and‑adapters, or Domain‑Driven Design are essential, with a proven track record of implementing these in production environments. Experience working with relational databases like PostgreSQL and event‑driven systems such as Kafka is required. You should have a solid background in AI‑augmented development, actively utilizing code agents or AI assistants in daily workflows. Familiarity with containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes, along with CI/CD pipelines, is necessary. Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS and infrastructure as code tools like Terraform is also required. Additionally, experience with mathematical optimization or data‑intensive applications is considered a plus. Strong testing practices, including unit, integration, and acceptance testing, are expected, along with excellent collaboration and communication skills.
As a Senior Python Engineer, your core responsibilities will include owning and evolving the backend architecture, including APIs, use case layers, domain models, serialization, and event‑driven pipelines using Kafka. You will take engineering ownership of new product modules, designing the architectural framework, wiring layers, and ensuring clear boundary definitions. Building and maintaining infrastructure—such as Kubernetes deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud resources on AWS—will be a key part of your role. Collaborating closely with Operations Research Engineers, you will integrate complex optimization algorithms into the product, ensuring they operate seamlessly within the platform. You will also be instrumental in integrating AI capabilities by combining large language models with our optimization engine, pushing the boundaries of planning and scheduling solutions. Working within an AI‑augmented development workflow, you will utilize code agents and AI assistants as standard tools for software delivery. Upholding high standards of code quality through reviews, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives is essential. You will develop well‑tested, self‑documenting code aligned with hexagonal architecture patterns, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and mentorship among colleagues to promote continuous learning and technical excellence.
