Job summary

SumUp in Berlin seeks an experienced DevOps/Platform engineer to own critical infrastructure. You will design Terraform patterns, manage EKS clusters, and lead security/compliance initiatives while improving CI/CD and developer experience. Mentoring teammates and influencing architecture are key parts of the role.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in DevOps or infrastructure, strong Kubernetes and AWS knowledge, and hands-on Go development experience, with an office-first setup in Berlin.

Qualifications

• At least 8 years of experience in DevOps, platform, or infrastructure engineering.
• Hands-on software development experience; Go preferred.
• Experience designing and maintaining infrastructure as code, ideally with Terraform.
• Strong production Kubernetes knowledge and AWS core services.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain Terraform modules and infrastructure patterns used by other teams.
• Manage production Kubernetes (EKS) clusters; tune performance and service mesh.
• Lead security and compliance work (PCI DSS, SOC2) with Security team.
• Define and monitor reliability metrics, participate in on-call rotation, drive incident improvements.
• Improve developer experience via automation and clearer CI/CD documentation.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to technical design discussions.

Location: Berlin, Germany (office first)

Our Platform Tribe builds Fleet, the infrastructure foundation that every engineering team at SumUp relies on to ship safely and quickly. Fleet gives teams a stable, self-service platform, built on AWS, Kubernetes and Terraform, so they can focus on their products instead of infrastructure bottlenecks. As part of the Cloud Infrastructure team, you'll take ownership of critical platform services, help modernise how we run Kubernetes at scale, and support engineers across the business as they build on top of what you maintain. If you enjoy solving complex infrastructure problems that quietly power everything else, this is where that work happens.

What you'll do

Design and maintain Terraform modules and infrastructure patterns that other engineering teams build on

Manage production Kubernetes (EKS) clusters, including performance tuning and service mesh implementation

Lead security and compliance work across frameworks such as PCI DSS and SOC2, partnering with the Security team

Define and monitor service reliability metrics, take part in on-call rotation, and drive improvements after incidents

Improve developer experience through automation, better CI/CD pipelines, and clearer documentation

Mentor other engineers on the team and contribute to technical design discussions

You'll be great for this role if…

At least 8 years of experience in DevOps, platform, or infrastructure engineering

• Proven hands-on experience in software development (Go preferred, but anyone would be good)

Experience designing and maintaining infrastructure as code, ideally with Terraform

Strong knowledge of Kubernetes in production, including cluster operations and troubleshooting

Hands‑on experience with core AWS services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, and load balancing

Comfort working within security and compliance requirements without slowing teams down

Ability to mentor other engineers and explain technical decisions clearly to different audiences
