Your role

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Supermodular AI, you will play a key role in shaping the foundation of our backend systems. You’ll design and implement scalable architectures, ensure high standards of reliability and performance, and make critical technical decisions that guide the growth of our platform. You’ll work closely with our engineering leads, collaborating on architectural direction and best practices, while also coordinating with junior colleagues to ensure smooth execution and delivery. Beyond coding, you will contribute to defining technical strategy, improving developer experience, and fostering a culture of high-quality engineering. This is a role for someone who thrives in a fast-moving, high-impact environment—someone who is not just an excellent builder, but also a mentor and collaborator who raises the bar for the entire team.

Desired skills and qualifications

• Strong technical foundation in backend engineering, with expertise in building and scaling distributed systems, APIs, and data pipelines.

• Proven experience independently designing system architectures, making trade-off decisions, and owning backend components from concept to production.

• Ownership of technical scope, making decisions and driving implementation proactively.

• Deep knowledge of at least one modern backend ecosystem (e.g., Python, or Node.js) and familiarity with cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

  • Preference towards Python, Node.js and Azure

• Solid understanding of databases (SQL and NoSQL), caching, messaging systems, and event-driven architectures.

• Practical approach to security, performance optimization, monitoring, and reliability.

• Experience mentoring and collaborating with junior engineers, fostering a learning-oriented environment.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to work cross-functionally with engineering leads, product managers, and other stakeholders.

• Founder mindset - makes informed decisions with cost/speed/value in mind and is comfortable navigating uncertainty or less-than-clear requirements.
