bonial is seeking a senior backend engineer to own the backend components of their domain team. You will design, develop and scale backend systems, collaborating with product managers and frontend engineers to deliver high‑quality features for end users.

You will work on high‑traffic, real‑time, geo‑located applications, building RESTful services on AWS with Docker and Kubernetes. Strong communication and Agile experience are valued, with a degree in CS and fluency in English.

We are looking for a passionate senior backend engineer with strong experience in designing, developing, and scaling backend systems that power our products. You will own the backend components of your domain team and work closely with product managers and front–end engineers to ship high quality features to our end users.

Responsibilities

• Own end‑to‑end backend services, operating with autonomy and proactively addressing technical challenges.
• Play an active role in the development of high‑traffic, real‑time, geo‑located online applications and surrounding ecosystems.
• Design and implement REST APIs on our AWS infrastructure, making use of AWS services for new components.
• Monitor backend services in production environments to ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability.
• Explore technologies such as AWS, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and REST API.
• Build a system in the spirit of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).

Qualifications

• Strong experience building backend applications.
• Experience with Node.js and/or Java 21+ (Spring Boot).
• Experience with hosting on AWS and using AWS’s services.
• Experience with agentic tools such as LLM agents, AI copilots, and Claude Code.
• Hands‑on experience with inter‑service communication, fault‑tolerant distributed systems, distributed caching mechanisms, and microservice architectures.
• Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms (preferably AWS) is highly desirable.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch.
• Very good communication skills; able to express ideas clearly.
• First experience in an agile software development team.
• Ability to work independently, responsibly, accurately and reliably.
• Team player, yet ambitious.
• Bachelor or master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
• Fluent in spoken and written English; German is not required.
• Eager to learn new technologies and interested in cloud architecture.
