An innovative research organization in Berlin is seeking a Researcher focused on bio-based construction resources. The ideal candidate will have an MSc in natural sciences and at least three years of applied research experience, particularly in statistical analysis and environmental systems. Responsibilities include compiling data, spatial mapping, and scenario development. This role offers growth within a diverse international team and involves travel to East Africa. Fixed-term contract with competitive salary based on experience and position within TV-L E13.
The Material Innovation & Application Team at Bauhaus Earth conducts applied research at the intersection of regenerative materials and global construction transformation. We are seeking a Researcher with experience in statistical and/or process-based modelling to contribute to a research project on regenerative resources for bio-based construction in East Africa.
The project examines how timber and agricultural resources can support emerging bio-based construction value chains, with a particular focus on logistics, coordination, and material flows between resource regions, processing sites, and construction projects. By combining spatial data analysis, resource and land-use assessment, and collaboration with early bio-based construction initiatives, the research develops an empirically grounded understanding of existing supply chains, constraints, and development potential.
The position offers the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment and to translate analytical insights into maps, scenarios, and decision-oriented frameworks that inform future modelling, infrastructure planning, and value-chain development.
MSc in natural sciences with a focus on or relation to forestry, land-use or environmental science, mathematics, resource management, geography, geoecology, agriculture, or a related field
At least three years of professional experience in applied research, consulting, or project work related to biomass, land use, natural resources, or environmental systems
Strong expertise in statistical analysis; experience with process-based modelling is an advantage
Experience working with data from the Global South; experience related to East Africa is a strong plus
Ability to translate complex datasets into clear maps, visualisations, and concise analytical outputs
Interest in bio-based materials, sustainable construction, and ecosystem or carbon-related questions
Based in Berlin or willing to relocate, with readiness for international travel (East Africa)
Excellent written and spoken English skills (minimum C1); German and additional language skills are an advantage
Contribute actively to research addressing major global challenges related to climate, resources, and the built environment
Work within an inspiring, interdisciplinary, and international team based in Berlin
Opportunities for professional development and growth in an applied research setting
Engage in a multidisciplinary environment offering space for responsibility and new ideas
Subsidy for the Job Deutschlandticket
Compile, screen, and synthesize existing data on biomass resources, land use, and material supply as a basis for further research
Conduct spatial mapping of resource availability, production patterns, and indicative material flows
Assess potential future resource dynamics, including land-use change, productivity trends, and key uncertainties
Support the development of semi-quantitative scenarios on resource supply potential
Contribute to early-stage scaling pathways, including indicative logistics corridors and siting considerations for processing or storage
Translate analytical insights into maps and concise technical inputs for project outputs and tools
Contribute to the further development of our Timber Atlas (https://bauhausearth-toolkit.com/dashboard-1/)
