University of Stuttgart invites applications for a Professorship (W3) in History of the 19th to 21st centuries. The holder will lead research and teaching across disciplines, with a transnational focus, and will collaborate with the Stuttgart Institute of History and the Faculty of Humanities.

We seek an accomplished scholar with a strong publication record, capable of contributing to inter-faculty cooperation and international exchange.

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany in one of Europe’s most vibrant high-tech and industrial areas. The university is a reliable employer, partner for technology transfer and is committed to the interdisciplinary integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.

The professorship is dedicated to representing the history of the 19th to 21st centuries in its entirety and from a transnational perspective in research and teaching, preferably with a focus on political or social history. It should also take into account issues of global, cultural, technological, economic and business history. The professorship is associated not only with the management of the Division of Modern History, but also with that of the Ludwigsburg Research Centre.

The holder of the professorship is expected to collaborate closely with the other divisions at the Stuttgart Institute of History and to contribute to its major research fields as well as to those of the Faculty of Humanities in general but also to engage willingly in inter-faculty cooperation.

Furthermore, participation in the University of Stuttgart's ‘International Centre for Cultural and Technical Research’ is desirable, as is a willingness to engage in close exchange with archives, libraries, museums and other cultural institutions in the Stuttgart metropolitan region.

A habilitation or equivalent post-doctoral qualifications in the field of history are required, as well as teaching experience appropriate to the position and of sufficient breadth.

The University of Stuttgart places particular emphasis on high-quality teaching, student support, and a corresponding level of commitment from teaching staff. Evidence of, or discernible potential for, outstanding teaching performance and active participation in the further development of the university’s existing courses are therefore expected. Experience with innovative teaching concepts as well as research-based teaching and learning is an asset. A willingness to pursue continuing education in university teaching is required.

We are searching for an individual who is distinguished by high-ranking scientific publications with international visibility.
