We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in ultrafast laser physics for a fixed‑term full‑time (39.83 h/wk) position at Ruhr University Bochum.

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) focusing on ultrafast laser physics

NLE specializes in nonlinear laser systems for patterning and self‑organization, using laser physics and light‑matter interactions. The role is funded by ERC Advanced Grant UNILASE with goal to design a laser system delivering sub‑30 fs pulses at 0.1–1 THz with kW average power.

Position details
  • Scope: full‑time
  • Duration: fixed‑term, 1 year
  • Start: at the earliest possible date

Your tasks:
  • Design and build experimental platforms, preferably supported by computational simulations.
  • Plan and perform the experiments.
  • Communicate and write scientific reports, manuscripts, and proposals.
  • Actively participate in lab/group meetings and present scientific advances.
Your profile:
  • Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong background in ultrafast and nonlinear optics and/or laser physics (required).
  • Experience designing and building ultrafast fiber lasers or amplifiers, especially Yb‑based high‑average‑power or high‑energy pulses, is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English (C1 required, C2 preferred) or having earned a degree in English‑instructioned institution.

Further information

The position is salaried and based on the collective agreement of the Länder (TV‑L). If the personal and collective agreement requirements are met, the employee will receive pay grade E13 TV‑L. The place of work is Ruhr University Bochum. If the position is funded by third‑party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.

RUB has an international presence. The campus languages are German and English. Competence in at least one of the two languages and the willingness to learn the other are a prerequisite. RUB provides free German language courses for employees.
