Jobbeschreibung

Postdoctoral Program The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies. It aims to develop an empirically based theory of the social and political foundations of modern economies by investigating the interrelation between social, economic, and political action. Building on the disciplinary traditions of sociology and political science, the Institute’s research program aims to combine and develop the approaches of new economic sociology and comparative and international political economy.

We are currently seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in the social sciences to join our Research Group on Technology and Statehood. The starting date for the position is March/April 1, 2027, or by agreement. This new research group, directed by Prof. (UiB) Dr. Regine Paul, examines articulations of states’ technological competitiveness projects, how and why they vary across time, space, and specific technologies, and what is at stake when states enter global tech races. Possible research topics are the public governance of (and with) artificial intelligence stacks, quantum computing and communication infrastructures, or digital twins in public administration. Empirical projects in decolonized contexts such as Brazil or India are particularly welcome.

As a postdoctoral researcher in the new group, you will work during a two-year contract on a project of your choice within the scope of the group’s research. The MPIfG offers excellent working conditions in an attractive, international research environment. Salary and benefits are according to the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD E13). Postdoctoral researchers are expected to work at the Institute in Cologne so that they can participate fully in its intellectual life and community.

Scholars of all nationalities who successfully completed their doctoral degree no longer than three years before the starting date at the MPIfG are eligible to apply. The successful candidate will be chosen on the basis of scholarly excellence, a research proposal of up to three pages outlining a project to be pursued at the MPIfG, and a job interview. A collaborative and collegial working environment is integral to the MPIfG. Starting from the application process, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all our employees. The compatibility of career and family is one of our key concerns, as is the employment of people with disabilities.

We look forward to receiving your online application in English or German. Please note that applications by email cannot be considered. For further information on the MPIfG’s postdoctoral program and how to apply, please visit our website. The application deadline is September18,2026, at 12:00PM (UTC+2). Interviews take place on October8,2026.
