PhD Positions in Statistical Physics and Active Matter

The Department of Living Matter Physics (LMP) at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization engages in a broad spectrum of theoretical research aimed at understanding the dynamics of living systems from a physical perspective. Headed by Prof. Dr. Ramin Golestanian, the department hosts a vibrant community of group leaders, postdoctoral researchers, students, and scientific visitors.

Applications are invited for full-time PhD positions (m/f/d) to engage in theoretical and/or computational research in Nonequilibrium Statistical Physics and Active Matter under the direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Ramin Golestanian.

Key details of the position and environment:

Contract Duration: Fixed-term for 3 years, with a flexible starting date.

Hours: Full-time.

Research Focus: Theoretical and computational investigation into nonequilibrium statistical physics and the physics of living systems across various spatial and temporal scales.

Eligibility Criteria:

Master’s degree (or comparable qualification) in theoretical physics, applied mathematics, or related disciplines from a recognized university.

Early-career researchers with an excellent academic background, high enthusiasm, and strong self-motivation.

Required Expertise / Skills:

Strong interest in nonequilibrium statistical physics and the physics of living systems across scales.

Ability and desire to collaborate effectively within an international team on interdisciplinary research topics.

Good command of spoken and written English (the official working language of the department). Knowledge of German is an asset but is not required.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Salary Details: 2/3 of E13 TVöD Bund (in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists)
