Job summary

Marvel Fusion, Europe\u2019s leading fusion energy company, seeks an experienced R&D leader to drive advanced materials and target development in Munich. You will mentor scientists, coordinate collaborations with academia and industry, and contribute to funding proposals.

You will oversee deposition, metrology, and characterization programs, ensuring ISO-classified cleanroom execution and scalable fabrication processes for fusion targets.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field in an R&D environment.
• Experience leading or contributing to multi-partner research or industrial collaborations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including technical writing for proposals and reports.

Responsibilities

• Initiate and develop an R&D stream focused on fuel and fusible materials integration into experimental targets for in-house use.
• Translate experimental requirements into reproducible fabrication processes, including scale-up of deposition and micro-fabrication techniques for target component integration.
• Characterization and metrology of fabricated components to verify specifications.
• Coordinate multi-partner consortia and reporting; build and maintain collaborations with academic and industrial partners.
• Draft public funding applications.
• Mentor junior scientists and coordinate cross-functional teams.
• Documentation and reporting: write and oversee technical and safety documentation, protocols, and reports.

Your responsibilities

• Initiate and develop an R&D stream focused on fuel and fusible materials integration into experimental targets for in-house use.
• Translate experimental requirements into reproducible fabrication processes, including scale-up of deposition and micro-fabrication techniques for target component integration.

• Documentation and reporting: write and oversee technical and safety documentation, protocols development, and contribute to internal, external, and funding-body reports.

What you bring

• 8+ years of experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field, with demonstrated seniority in an R&D environment.
• Hands‑on experience with several of the following fabrication techniques, and working knowledge of the rest:
  • Deposition techniques and material synthesis (e.g. CVD, MLD, ALD, PLD, sputter-coating, e‑beam and thermal evaporation, spray-coating, spin-coating, electrodeposition).
  • Laser cutting or machining using picosecond and/or femtosecond laser systems.
  • Additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Molding, hot pressing.
• Hands‑on experience with several of the following characterization and metrology techniques, and working knowledge of the rest, applied to fabricated components to verify specifications are met: atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry, ellipsometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
• Practical experience working with processes under inert atmosphere for sensitive or reactive materials.
• Experience working in ISO-classified cleanroom environments.
• A track record leading or contributing to multi-partner research or industrial collaborations.
• Experience leading or contributing to public funding applications, with a track record of awarded proposals.
• Providing technical leadership and mentoring junior scientists and engineers in an experimental environment with evolving priorities.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, including technical writing for proposals and reports.

What sets you apart

• Familiarity with lab automation and the development of novel fabrication processes.
• Experience with novel or exotic materials relevant to fusion targets (e.g., aerogels, foams, deuterated polymers).
• Experience in fusion, plasma physics, inertial confinement fusion (ICF), or energy systems.
