Jobbeschreibung

Master Thesis - Spin Dynamics for NMR Hyperpolarization

If you are interested in creative problem solving at the interface between chemistry and physics, with the chance to mix hands‑on experimental work with theory and simulations, this opportunity may be for you. The function of every cell and organism depends critically on the dynamic interactions between biological macromolecules and on their correct three‑dimensional structure. Faulty interactions and misfolded structures lead to disease and aging. In our Institute of Biological Information Processing (IBI) – Structural Biochemistry (IBI-7), research aims to understand these interactions and to determine the three‑dimensional structure of protein complexes involved in crucial cellular processes.

The Hyperpolarization Methods research group at IBI‑7 is open for applications for a Masters thesis project in the field of nuclear spin dynamics. We use a method called parahydrogen‑induced polarization, which is a hyperpolarization technique to enhance the NMR/MRI signals of small molecules by a factor of 10⁴ – 10⁵, to enable exciting new applications in medical diagnostics and materials characterization. The hyperpolarization step requires the use of designed magnetic field pulse sequences, and we are looking for a Masters student to work in this area.

Your Job

This project has two possible directions:

  • Simulating and implementing NMR pulse sequences to manipulate hyperpolarized spin states
  • Constructing instrumentation to do low‑field NMR experiment
Your Profile
  • Current master studies in physics, chemistry, materials science or similar
  • Basic experience with NMR is beneficial
  • Willing to work within a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment
  • Curiosity and excitement to learn
  • Good knowledge of spoken English

In the research group you will work in an environment that combines the best parts of modern science with traditional academic values. You will carry out fast‑paced research on societally‑relevant topics, with individual support (especially for your personal well‑being) so you can grow as an individual. At the same time, you will have ample opportunity for acquiring knowledge, discussing science, and thinking creatively.

Our Benefits for You

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We support you in your work with:

  • Meaningful Tasks: Your thesis deals with a future‑oriented, socially relevant topic with direct practical relevance in an international and interdisciplinary working environment
  • Practical relevance: Clearly defined goals, leading to results for a thesis
  • Scientific environment: Work in a high‑impact research field linking quantum technologies and biomedicine; potential to publish project results in a peer‑reviewed journal
  • Onboarding & teamwork: You can look forward to working in a dedicated, international, and collegial team. It is important to us that you quickly settle into the team and are given structured training for your tasks. We also support you from the very beginning and make your start easier with our Welcome Days and Welcome Guide, as well as with specific support services for international employees if needed, e.g., through our International Advisory Service.
  • Campus experience: Our research campus in the countryside creates ideal conditions for collegial exchange and sporting activities right on site. Our cafeteria offers a wide range of options – you can enjoy a relaxing lunch break with a lake view
  • Fixed‑term position: The position is initially for a fixed term of 6 months
  • Fair remuneration: We will pay you a reasonable remuneration for your thesis
Equal Opportunity

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, e.g. in terms of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation / identity, and social, ethnic and religious origin. A diverse and inclusive working environment with equal opportunities in which everyone can realize their potential is important to us.

Place of Employment: Jülich
