Junior Professorship (W1-equivalent) in "German Literature of the 18th and 19th Centuries as a Cultural and Social History" (with tenure-track to W2 LBesG-equivalent) (f/m/d)
If the legal requirements for civil servant status are not met, employment may be possible under a private
employment contract. The junior professorship involves representation of the designated field in both research and teaching.It is aimed at junior researchers in an early career phase and with exceptional potential for a further academic career.
The successful candidate will represent the German-language literature of the 18th and 19th centuries in research and teaching, drawing on approaches from cultural studies to explore the interactions between literature and other sectors of society, such as politics, economics, or the environment. The literature of this period should also be viewed as a form of societal self-observation, with a focus on power asymmetries, exclusions, and inclusions. The junior professorship will particularly support teacher training at the University of Trier by offering classical literature canon as well as critically reflecting on processes of canon formation. Since the Department of German Studies trains a high number of prospective teachers (Grundschule, Realschule Plus, Gymnasium), a substantial contribution to this area of training is expected. Candidates are required to hold an excellent, culturally oriented doctoral dissertation on German-language literature of the 18th or 19th century.
Furthermore, experience in academic self-administration and in securing third-party funding is expected.
The official duties are defined in § 48 HochSchG. Appointment requirements follow § 49 HochSchG. The ability to offer courses in German is expected.
The employment term (limited term with civil service status) will generally run for six years. After three years and not later than the end of the fourth year of employment, an interim evaluation will be conducted. This evaluation is to give an orientation with regard to the standard of performance in teaching and research. After a final successful evaluation as W1 Junior Professor after six years, andprovided the general requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will qualify for appointment to a tenured full professorship (W2). We refer to § 50 (5) 5 and 6 HochSchG – Higher Education Act in this context.
