Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is seeking a talented Hydrogeologist to join our Geoscience Team. You will work with hydrogeologists and contaminated land specialists across Wales, providing expert advice on development planning, groundwater resources and groundwater quality.

You will deliver technical guidance, contribute to pre-application discussions, assess permits with groundwater risks, and support sustainable groundwater management, including evaluating abstraction proposals and remediation

We are seeking a talented Hydrogeologist to join our Geoscience Team.

In this role, you will work alongside a team of hydrogeologists and contaminated land specialists across Wales, providing expert advice and support to colleagues across Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Your work will focus on development planning, groundwater resources, and groundwater quality.

You will play a key role in delivering specialist technical guidance, including contributing to pre-application discussions with developers, assessing permit applications with potential risks to groundwater, and supporting the sustainable management of groundwater resources. This includes evaluating new groundwater abstraction applications, as well as reviewing remediation strategies and environmental investigations.

You will also contribute to the ongoing development of NRW's geoscience regulatory approach. This will involve interpreting legislation, gathering evidence, and helping to develop operational policies, guidance, and practical tools to support staff across the organisation.

This position is based within the Strategy, Policy and Evidence Directorate, reporting to the Geoscience Team Leader. The role does not include line management responsibilities.

Driving is essential to this role as this role requires travel to remote locations with heavy equipment across Wales using NRW vehicles as part of their duties in the team. Public transport will not be appropriate and car sharing will not always be possible. You must hold a full and current UK driving license.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

About us

Within Natural Resources Wales, Geoscience encompasses groundwater resources, groundwater quality, land quality, and discharges from abandoned coal mines. The Geoscience Team provides both technical expertise and policy leadership on matters relating to land contamination and groundwater protection across Wales.

In this role, your expertise will directly contribute to shaping NRW's policies, programmes, plans, strategies, and guidance. You will also act in an advisory capacity to the Welsh Government, with opportunities to support the development of legislation and national guidance, as well as contribute to a range of UK and Wales-wide working groups.

What you will do

• Prepare technical assessments, drawing on a range of complex information and data.
• Manage the preparation of material to inform the development of NRW, WG and other Partners policy, advice and guidance documents; Manage the development of procedures, tools and guidance and lead the delivery of new ways of working.
• Liaise with external stakeholders such as Welsh Government, sector representatives and partners to ensure the timely and effective delivery of project, policy or strategy obligations.
• Advise on evidence needs and opportunities and project manage agreed evidence projects, in line with the agreed evidence programme.
• Support engagement with sectors and partners, WG, Water Users, Local Authorities, industry and those dependent on groundwater in Wales and the UK; and be the lead point of contact for customer queries.
• Maintain knowledge of Hydrogeological Science identifying the implications of legislative, technology and market changes for Natural Resources Wales and the related sectors.
• Contribute to task and finish groups, commissioned through the Business Boards, to prepare defined products as required.
• Collaborate with the Team Leader to develop and deliver an agreed Personal Development Plan.
• Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.

• Knowledge of Welsh, UK and EU legislation related to Hydrogeology and Water Resources; Welsh, UK and Welsh Government policy drivers in Hydrogeology; and the issues and opportunities in Wales
• Knowledge and practical understanding of the range of partners and stakeholders and industries involved with Hydrogeology in Wales.
• Experience of technical analysis and interpretation of a range of complex environmental information and data sources; analysing large data sets.
• Working with/in WG, water companies, local authorities, Sector & industries dependent on Groundwater, eNGOs, NRW Operations.
• Working in a programme and project management environment with Project Management experience and/or qualifications.
• You will be a member of a relevant professional institution and/or working towards membership.
• Share your knowledge and expertise to help solve problems, supporting all Heads of Business as required.
