Freelance Hardware Engineer – Embedded Systems | Onsite in Hamburg | 6 Months

We are seeking a skilled Embedded Hardware Engineer for a 6-month contract position in Hamburg, working on the modernization of a complex embedded system. This role offers the opportunity to work hands-on with both analog and digital hardware, upgrading legacy components and ensuring seamless integration with modern platforms.

  • Location: Hamburg (100% onsite)
  • Start Date: June, 2025
  • Duration: 6 months, with extension possible
  • Hours: Full-time (40 hrs/week)
  • Languages: English and German
  • Interviews: Asap

Key Responsibilities:

  • Redesign and upgrade an existing embedded platform, replacing a legacy DSP with a Cortex-M7/M4 MCU
  • Replace an older Cyclone III FPGA with Cyclone 10, including porting of VHDL code
  • Review and update analog circuitry, replacing obsolete components with modern alternatives
  • Design new schematics and PCB layouts; manage prototyping and assembly
  • Define and implement communication between MCU and FPGA via CAN, SPI, I²C
  • Integrate and configure ARM peripherals and support migration of embedded software, including the CANopen driver stack

Required Skills:

  • Strong background in embedded hardware design, especially with ARM Cortex-M and Altera/Intel FPGAs
  • Proficient in analog circuit design and component selection
  • Solid experience with VHDL, including simulation, porting, and debugging
  • Familiar with CAN, SPI, I²C, and general embedded communication
  • Experience in PCB design, from schematic to functional prototype
  • Bonus: Prior success in modernizing or maintaining legacy systems
