Zusammenfassung

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin invites applications for an Engineer or Scientist to support the BESSY III accelerator physics activities. You will plan and coordinate injection and extraction systems, design pulsed magnets, prepare specifications and support procurement, and help produce the TDR.

Candidates should hold a Master’s degree in EE/Physics/MechEng or mechatronics, with PhD preferred, in pulsed magnets/accelerator physics.

Qualifikationen

  • Completed university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field; PhD highly desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge of electrodynamics of pulsed magnets and experience with electromagnetic simulation software such as ANSYS and CST Studio Suite.
  • Experience in design and engineering of pulsed electromagnets using 3D CAD systems, considering mechanical design, electromagnetic performance, cooling, stability, and long-term reliability.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation and measurement techniques for pulsed electromagnetic fields.
  • Excellent proficiency in English or German (C1), with good command of the other language.

Aufgaben

  • Plan, develop, and coordinate engineering activities related to static and pulsed injection/extraction systems for BESSY III.
  • Design and develop pulsed magnets (kickers/septa) for injection into the storage ring, meeting accelerator parameters using simulations.
  • Prepare technical specifications and support procurement for pulsed magnet and pulsed power supply systems.
  • Characterize and measure pulsed electromagnetic fields of prototypes and demonstrate long-term stability.
  • Contribute to the Technical Design Report (TDR) for BESSY III.

Engineer / Scientist (f/m/d) Injection and Extraction Systems for BESSY III

Reference No.: BE 2026/2

Would you like to help shape the future? With BESSY III, we are building and will operate a next-generation synchrotron radiation source for materials research. It will provide the foundation for the knowledge-based design of novel materials and contribute to addressing major societal challenges. BESSY III is being optimized for high-resolution spectroscopic and microscopic investigations in the soft to medium X-ray range. Combined with specialized laboratory facilities and embedded within the HZB research campus and the Berlin-Adlershof Science and Technology Park, BESSY III will enable users from universities, research institutes, and industry to gain unique insights into materials, processes, and devices under realistic operating conditions. We are currently developing the conceptual & technical design of the facility, which is scheduled to begin operation in 2035. To strengthen our BESSY III project team, we are looking for an Engineer or Scientist to support the accelerator physics activities.

Your Tasks
  • You will plan, develop, and coordinate the engineering activities related to the static and pulsed injection and extraction systems for BESSY III.
  • You will design and develop the pulsed electromagnets (kickers and septa) for injection into the BESSY III storage ring, ensuring that they meet the required accelerator parameters using appropriate simulation tools.
  • You will prepare the technical specifications for the required equipment and support the procurement process for the pulsed magnet and pulsed power supply systems.
  • You will characterize and measure the pulsed electromagnetic fields of the first prototypes and demonstrate their long-term stability.
  • Through your work and results, you will make a significant contribution to the Technical Design Report (TDR) for BESSY III.
Your Profile
  • A completed university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field; a PhD in the relevant discipline, preferably with a specialization in pulsed magnet systems and accelerator physics, is highly desirable
  • In-depth knowledge of the electrodynamics of pulsed magnets and experience with electromagnetic simulation software such as ANSYS and CST Studio Suite
  • Experience in the design and engineering of pulsed electromagnets using 3D CAD systems, taking into account mechanical design, electromagnetic performance, cooling, stability, and long-term reliability
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory instrumentation and measurement techniques, particularly for the characterization and measurement of pulsed electromagnetic fields
  • Excellent proficiency in either English or German (C1 level), with good command of the other language.
Your Benefits

At Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, you will benefit from a collaborative international environment, state-of-the-art research facilities, and a wide range of benefits to support your scientific career:

  • The opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative materials and technological solutions for a climate-neutral future in cooperation with leading international researchers
  • Flexible working hours and the possibility to work remotely
  • Career-enhancing networking opportunities, individual guidance, and support through our Graduate Center and Postdoc Office
  • 30 days of vacation per year and attractive remuneration according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund), plus company pension plan
  • Advisory services on family and career matters through our Office for Work & Life
  • Subsidy for the public transport “Deutschlandticket Job” and exclusive employee discounts
  • Relocation support from non-EU countries
  • German and English courses for all proficiency levels
Contact

Fixed term contract for 36 months. The salary is based on the Collective Agreement for the German Public Service (TVöD-Bund).

We very much want our workplace to be diverse, and welcome applications from people with different backgrounds. It is our mission to promote equal opportunities and to improve women’s representation in the workforce. We are therefore very interested in receiving applications from women.
