Description Of Work

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified applicants for full-time and part-time Detention Officer positions within the county jail. The Detention Officer is responsible for maintaining the security and safety of the jail facility, supervising inmates, and performing a wide range of duties related to inmate processing, facility upkeep, and institutional order. This includes patrolling the facility regularly to prevent disturbances and ensure a secure environment, as well as supervising inmates during meals, hygiene routines, and other daily activities to ensure compliance with institutional rules and procedures. Officers escort and safeguard inmates to and from their cells, monitor their physical and mental condition, and assist with visitation processes. Additional duties involve conducting thorough searches of cells and common areas for contraband, assisting with the booking and releasing of inmates, processing personal and medical information, and securing inmate property during intake. Officers are also responsible for distributing medication to inmates as prescribed or directed, keeping detailed records of inmate behavior and facility operations, inspecting and logging items brought into the facility, and monitoring both incoming and outgoing mail. Ensuring the cleanliness and proper maintenance of inmate quarters and performing general office tasks related to jail administration are also part of the role.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Candidates must have the ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately and demonstrate strong problem-solving skills within the scope of assigned duties; the capacity to supervise and maintain control over large groups of inmates in a firm, fair, and consistent manner; should be skilled in preparing clear and accurate records and reports and possess the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and other individuals encountered in the course of duties.

Education And Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements

Detention officer certification. Applicable training will be provided and must be completed upon hire and on an ongoing basis. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina. Candidates should be 21 with no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
