Job summary

SME Careers is seeking an experienced Android Engineer (Kotlin/Java) to work remotely on an hourly contractor basis. You will review AI-generated Android code, assess architectures, and produce high-quality reference implementations with step-by-step reasoning for complex problems.

You will evaluate solutions for correctness, security, performance, and compliance with best practices. This role involves reviewing Jetpack Compose/UI, concurrency, memory, app lifecycle, networking, and persistence

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of professional Android app development in Kotlin and Java.
• Expert-level Kotlin (Kotlin 1.6+) features: null-safety, coroutines/flows, sealed types, generics.
• Strong Android fundamentals: lifecycle, Activities/Fragments, permissions.
• UI with Jetpack Compose and/or Views; reasoning about recomposition and state hoisting.
• Concurrency with coroutines and threading best practices.
• Knowledge of MVVM, Clean Architecture, and DI (Hilt/Dagger/Koin).
• Experience with networking, data storage, caching, and persistence.
• Testing with JUnit/Espresso; CI/CD with Gradle; security and privacy awareness.

Job description

As an Android Engineer (Kotlin / Java), you will work remotely on an hourly paid basis to review AI-generated Android code, mobile architectures, and technical explanations, as well as produce high-quality reference implementations and step-by-step reasoning for complex engineering problems. You will assess solutions for correctness, clarity, security, performance, reliability, and adherence to the prompt; identify issues in Jetpack Compose/UI, concurrency, threading, memory/performance, app lifecycle, networking, persistence, and build/release practices; fact-check technical information; write high-quality explanations and model solutions that demonstrate best practices; and rate and compare multiple AI responses based on correctness and reasoning quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop AI Training Content: Create detailed prompts across Android topics and write high-quality reference answers to guide AI learning.
• Optimize AI Performance: Evaluate and rank AI responses to enhance correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Ensure Model Integrity: Test AI outputs for inaccuracies or unsafe recommendations, validating reliability across real-world Android use cases.

Your Profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 4+ years of professional experience building production Android apps, including work in Kotlin and (ideally) Java codebases.
• Expert-level proficiency in Kotlin (Kotlin 1.6+): null-safety, coroutines/flows, sealed types, generics, and idiomatic patterns.
• Strong Android fundamentals: app lifecycle, Activities/Fragments, state restoration, background execution limits, and permissions.
• Modern UI experience with Jetpack Compose and/or Views; ability to reason about recomposition, state hoisting, and UI performance.
• Concurrency expertise: coroutines, Flow, threading best practices, cancellation, and avoiding race conditions/ANRs.
• Strong knowledge of architecture patterns: MVVM, Clean Architecture concepts, dependency injection (Hilt/Dagger/Koin), and modularization.
• Experience with networking and data: Retrofit/OkHttp, serialization, caching, offline strategies, and persistence (Room/SQLite/DataStore).
• Experience with testing and quality: JUnit, instrumentation tests, Compose UI tests/Espresso, mocking strategies, CI/CD (Gradle, Play Console workflow).
• Security awareness: secure storage (Keystore/EncryptedSharedPreferences), auth flows, certificate pinning awareness, privacy permissions, and sensitive data handling.
• Minimum C1 English proficiency (written and spoken), with the ability to write clear technical explanations and follow detailed English-language guidelines.
• Previous experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus.
• Highly detail-oriented and systematic, with a methodical approach to evaluating reasoning quality and identifying subtle issues in complex Android code.
