Offer Description

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology:

Chair of Nonlinearity Engineering

We are looking to fill a fixed-term, full-time position (39.83 hours/week) for a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in ultrafast laser physics.

NLE explores the fundamentals and practical implementation of nonlinear systems to achieve specific patterns, structures, or functionalities, often using laser physics, light-matter interactions, and nonlinear phenomena. Our research combines experimental and theoretical approaches, with applications ranging from laser technology to material processing and laser surgery, aiming towards developing an “Atom Printer” based on laser-driven self-organization.

The position is funded by the ERC Advanced Grant UNILASE, focusing on designing and demonstrating a novel laser system for ultrafast pulsed matter interactions with unprecedented laser parameters (sub-30 fs pulses at 0.1-1 THz repetition rate with kW average powers). The role involves experimental design, execution, and scientific communication.

  • Design and build experimental platforms, supported by computational simulations.
  • Plan and conduct experiments.
  • Publish scientific reports, manuscripts, and proposals.
  • Participate in meetings, present findings.

Your profile:

  • Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, photonics, or related fields.
  • Expertise in ultrafast and nonlinear optics, laser physics.
  • Experience with ultrafast fiber lasers/amplifiers, especially Yb-based, is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in English (C1 required, C2 preferred) or degrees from English-medium universities.

We offer:

  • Challenging tasks with independence.
  • Employment at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany.
  • Collaborative team environment.
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Location in the vibrant Ruhr region.

Additional information:

The position is salaried based on TV-L collective agreement, likely pay grade E13.

Workplace: Ruhr University Bochum.

If funded solely by external sources, no teaching duties are required.

The Staff Council participates in selection processes; candidates can request their involvement.

Apply via the online portal by 31 August 2025, referencing ANR 4618.

Scope: Full-time, Duration: 1 year, Start: ASAP.
