Job Purpose

Reporting to ECFR’s Distinguished Policy Fellow of the DARE Future-Proofing Europe Project, the Research Assistant (RA) provides general research support and assistance in a variety of activities within a new grant focused on “de-risking, diversifying and decarbonizing” as guided by the project leadership team. The RA will gather and analyze data, monitor geopolitical developments, and assist in drafting policy reports and briefs. In addition, the RA collaborates to help coordinate the project team’s agenda and serve as a key point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders. This role is central to advancing the research agenda of the project which spans across all ECFR programmes and national offices, of the cross-programmatic project, supporting strategic decision-making, and fostering relationships with key policy experts, stakeholders, and collaborators.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct background research gathering, analyzing and synthesizing data from written publications, speeches, policy papers.
  • Plan external meetings (both virtual and in-person) with senior politicians, policy-makers, journalists, companies, foundations and thinkers, drafting correspondence and ensuring appropriate follow-up, including working on event planning—in close collaboration with the European Power Programme Coordinator.
  • Handle logistical arrangements for research interviews, workshops, conferences and other events; collate brainstorm sessions and seminars; Handle logistical arrangements for research interviews, workshops, conferences and other events; collate brainstorm sessions and seminars.
  • Write summary reports of books, articles, seminars, and conferences and producing transcripts and notes of research interviews.
  • Assist on writing funding proposals and designing engaging presentations; contribute to the strategic planning and overall research direction working closely with the Distinguished Policy Fellow.
  • Assisting in stakeholder mapping and management and updating our internal systems and database

Additional tasks may be assigned as needed to support overall ECFR organizational priorities.

Person Specification

Education

  • A Bachelor’s or Master's degree in international affairs, political science, public policy or related field.

Experience

  • Previous experience conducting research in a variety of topics.
  • Experience in administrative/project coordination, especially in a research-driven environment is highly desirable.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken (native level) is a must, additional languages are an advantage.
  • Interest in international affairs, climate and energy policy is a must; international political economy or trade policy expertise is a plus

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analysis skills, with the ability to synthesize large volumes of information and find new and original ways of connecting the dots.
  • Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to draft reports, briefs, and correspondence to a high standard.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and demanding deadlines while ensuring attention to detail.
  • Strong problem-solving to approach challenges creatively and proactively, ensuring flexibility to adapt to varying workloads.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-national team, fostering a positive collaborative culture
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to comfortably interact across various organizational levels and with external stakeholders in a confident and professional manner.
  • Discreet and able to handle sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office; and good knowledge of presentation packages.
  • Knowledge handling social media, CRM and data analysis software and research databases.
  • Experience in navigating AI powered research tools

Special conditions

  • This role requires occasional travel and general willingness to work outside of standard business hours if necessary, including occasional weekends or evenings.
