At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

Join a cutting-edge research initiative at our Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures, where we apply Distributed Acoustic Sensing to monitor and protect critical underwater environments. We are seeking a talented researcher with a passion for data analysis, signal detection, and applied research in collaboration with industry and public authorities.

Your Tasks

• Analyze underwater fiber-sensing data and develop algorithms for event detection, considering the influence of environmental conditions and various cable configurations.
• Identify and classify signal signatures (e.g., from surface or underwater vehicles) relevant to the safety and security of maritime infrastructure.
• Compare the performance of fiber-optic sensing with conventional technologies such as hydrophone arrays.
• Present research results in peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences.
• Collaborate with industry partners and governmental authorities.
  
  

Your profile

• Completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) in natural or engineering sciences, such as geophysics, geoscience, oceanography, or a related field
• Solid expertise in one or more of the following areas: underwater acoustics, seismic data analysis, or distributed acoustic sensing (phase - optical time domain reflectrometry)
• In-depth knowledge of digital signal processing and data techniques
• Basic knowledge of machine learning and AI methods, in particular with relevance to environmental event detection
• Proficiency in programming, preferably in Python and/or C++
• Very good command of English, both written and spoken
  
  

Remuneration is up to the German TVöD 13 depending on qualifications and assigned tasks
