Job summary

CERN's Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings (VSC) Group seeks a Mechanical Engineer to help upgrade the world’s most powerful accelerator by supporting vacuum system installation, testing and commissioning for the LHC upgrades. Training and international environment are provided.

Responsibilities include validating vacuum equipment, performing leak tests, bake-out, NEG activation, and documenting tests with cross-functional teams. On-site work in challenging environments is required.

Qualifications

  • Experience with helium leak detection methods and equipment.
  • Experience with on-site vacuum system work including mechanical installation and in-situ testing.
  • Familiarity with outgassing in vacuum systems and RGA in UHV environments.
  • Understanding of UHV principles and ability to analyze data from vacuum gauges.
  • Ability to prepare and manage technical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vacuum acceptance testing of baked components for HL-LHC collimator upgrade.
  • Test and validate vacuum equipment before installation; ensure RGA meets requirements.
  • Carry out leak tests, bake-out system installation, and NEG activation.
  • Assemble and prepare mechanical and vacuum systems for installation and operation.
  • Support installation, testing and commissioning of equipment for LHC upgrade programme.
  • Prepare technical documentation, test reports and intervention records.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and support procurement and delivery of components.
  • Participate in maintenance, upgrade and repair activities in the LHC tunnel.
