Proton Technologies AG is seeking an experienced Backend Engineer to shape the architecture of Proton's core backend services. You will design shared libraries, drive API quality, and collaborate with product teams on scalable solutions across Proton’s product family.

You will work in PHP and Rust where performance and safety matter, contribute to internal tooling, and help maintain a healthy monorepo with strong API design principles. A security-minded, collaborative engineer will thrive here.

Qualifikationen

• 5+ years building and operating backend systems in production, including code you stayed responsible for long after launch, with a focus on modern PHP.
• Working knowledge of Rust, or evidence you can learn quickly—ownership and lifetimes matter.
• Genuine taste in API design and opinions about naming, defaults, error handling, and library vs service.
• Experience shaping architecture at codebase scale with a large monorepo and clear module boundaries.

Aufgaben

• Design and build shared libraries, framework layers, and internal services used across Proton products.
• Turn recurring patterns into clear abstractions and reusable components.
• Write documentation and examples that people actually use, and treat adoption as part of shipping.
• Improve daily development experience: build times, local dev setup, tests, and debuggability.
• Collaborate with product teams via RFCs, design reviews, and cross-team PRs.
