Lightium AG seeks an experienced metrology and quality control specialist for its semiconductor cleanroom. You will characterize wafers and chips with SEM, profilometry, optical and confocal microscopes, and manage die sorting and packaging with full traceability.
You will work with process, design and test engineers, fab partners and suppliers to ensure inspection, data integrity and timely release of products as the company scales.
As part of our Operations team, you will be the day-to-day responsible for metrology and quality control, as well as die sorting and packaging in our semiconductor cleanroom. You will characterize wafers and chips with a broad set of metrology tools (including optical microscopes, SEM), run incoming and outgoing inspection, operate the pick-and-place machine for die sorting and package and document our products with full traceability. You will work closely with our process, design and test engineers, as well as with fab partners and suppliers. Precision and reliable execution are at the core of the job, and your experience will help shape the way we measure, inspect and release our products as we scale.
Metrology: Perform wafer- and chip-level measurements using SEM, stylus profilometer, optical and confocal microscopes, and ellipsometer (e.g., film thickness, critical dimensions, etch depth and step height, surface topography and defects). Set up and maintain measurement recipes, keep tools calibrated and in good working condition, and coordinate with service providers when needed.
Sorting & Packaging: Sort chips and dies by hand using manual and vacuum tweezers, as well as operate our pick & place machine to sort dies from singulated wafers on tape to industry-standards shipping containers such as GelPak, waffle pack, JEDEC tray. Handle wafer taping, die marking, final sorting, packaging and sealing in vacuum bags.
Data & Reporting: Record, analyze and report measurement results in a clear and traceable way, compliant with our data-stack and data ingestion processes. Promptly flag out-of-spec results and deviations to engineering, support root-cause investigations, and help trend key parameters over time.
Incoming Quality Control: Inspect incoming wafers, chips and critical materials from fab partners and suppliers against specifications, complete goods acceptance documentation, and handle nonconforming material in coordination with internal stakeholders.
Outgoing Quality Control: Perform final visual and dimensional inspection of chips and wafers before shipment, prepare Certificates of Conformance (CoC) and inspection reports for customers, and ensure that packaging meets our quality standards.
Traceability: Ensure full traceability of every wafer and chip through consistent labeling and identification, keep inventory and traceability records accurate in our ERP, PLM system for data traceability, and help maintain the same standards across our R&D and production lines.
Procedures & Improvement: Contribute to writing and updating work instructions and inspection and measurement procedures as part of our growing quality management system, and suggest practical improvements based on your daily work, including suggestions for engineers for better automations and improvements of our MES system.
Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in metrology and quality control in semiconductor, photonics, MEMS or a related micro- and nanofabrication environment such as watch industry and medical instruments. Technical education such as an EFZ apprenticeship (e.g., Mikrotechnologe/in, Physiklaborant/in), a higher technical diploma, or an FH degree in a related field.
Metrology Know-how: Hands‑on operation of SEM, profilometry, optical and confocal microscopy, ellipsometry, as well as pick‑and‑place machine for die sorting. Solid experience and dexterity with manual handling of wafers and chips with tweezers. Solid understanding of inspection criteria for wafers and dies.
Cleanroom Experience: Proven experience working in ISO 5 / ISO 6 cleanrooms and gray‑rooms, operating cleanroom equipment ensuring compliance with cleanroom requirements, as well as preventive and regular maintenance and calibration of tools.
Precision & Work Ethic: Meticulous, reliable and hardworking. You take pride in getting things right the first time and in documenting your work so others can trust your results.
Quality Mindset: Familiarity with quality standards (e.g., ISO 9001), nonconformance handling and traceability. Experience preparing CoCs or inspection reports is a plus.
Tools: Comfortable with Microsoft 365, especially Excel for data analysis. Experience with ERP and PLM systems as well as automation and MES is a plus. Interested in using AI tools such as Claude in your daily work.
Language Skills: Good English is preferred. German or French or Italian is a plus.
We’d love to hear from you if you take pride in precise, careful work and want to help build a company that is shaping the future of photonics. Lightium is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
