Organizational context: The World Health Organization's Department of Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, Child, Adolescent and Ageing Health (LHR) focuses on advancing global health equity and rights. Within LHR, the Rights and Equality Across the Life Course Unit addresses adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), integrating equality and rights across its work. This role supports the HRP program, a key UN instrument for SRHR research and capacity building.

Job purpose: This role serves as a senior technical and scientific reference for adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) within WHO and among global stakeholders. The incumbent will lead and oversee the development and implementation of a research agenda, including conceptualizing protocols, managing research activities, and ensuring high-quality, ethical research. A key aspect is synthesizing evidence to inform guidelines and policies, strengthening health systems, and promoting the use of research findings to improve adolescent SRHR globally. The position also involves building partnerships and leading fundraising efforts to support this critical area of work.

Responsibilities: Serve as a lead technical and scientific reference for adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to Member States, UN agencies, and other stakeholders, providing authoritative advice. Oversee, develop, and implement a research agenda and priorities informed by global health challenges and scientific literature. Lead and manage research activities, including protocol development, partner recruitment, agreement management, scientific meetings, training facilitation, site monitoring, data management, and publication of results. Coordinate capacity strengthening for research centers to ensure high-quality, ethical research. Synthesize evidence, conduct systematic reviews, and contribute to evidence-based guidelines. Prepare technical reports for governing bodies and donors. Lead communication efforts to disseminate and promote the use of WHO/HRP outputs. Build and maintain partnerships with governments, NGOs, and researchers to advance SRHR access. Lead fundraising initiatives for the program.

Education: Essential: Advanced university degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field contributing to adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights. Desirable: Ph.D. in a field related to adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Work experience: Essential: Minimum 10 years of international research and research management experience in adolescent SRHR, including in low- and middle-income countries. At least 5 years leading research projects in adolescent SRHR. At least 7 years developing policies or implementing SRHR programs. Desirable: Experience within a UN agency or international NGO in low- and middle-income countries.

Skills: Expert knowledge of adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and public health aspects. Strong research leadership, analytical, and scientific writing skills with a publication record. Fundraising knowledge and demonstrated success in resource mobilization. Strong communication and diplomatic skills.
