The Chair of Ecosystem Physiology at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher (m/f/d) in Root ecology, Ecophysiology, and Root exudation. The fixed-term position starts 1 January 2027 for 3+1 years, with 65% part-time work and TV-L E13 pay.

You will join the FOREST FLOOR project to study drought effects on root exudation and beech physiology, using minirhizotrons, sap flow sensors, and stable isotopes.

Qualifikationen

• Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Geoecology, Biology or related fields.
• Excellent background in plant physiology, including root ecology, nutrient cycling and stable isotopes.
• Experience with GC-MS, minirhizotrons, sap flow and dendrometry is a plus.
• A high degree of autonomy, responsibility, flexibility, team spirit and organizational skills.
• Excellent English skills.
• Great enthusiasm for field and lab work.
• Interest in collaborative, interdisciplinary research.
• Driver's license (class B) is required.

Aufgaben

• Regularly sample compound-specific root exudates and conduct analyses.
• Operate minirhizotron setups for root development observations.
• Upscale total root exudation fluxes within FOREST FLOOR project.
• Study drought effects on European beech and other temperate species.
• Collaborate on microbial communities and mycorrhiza in the Forest Floor.
• Install sap flow sensors and dendrometers in study trees.
• Investigate litter-derived N dispersal with 15N isotopes.
