Job summary

CERN is seeking a Network Administrator for the ATLAS DAQ project in Geneva. The role involves installing, testing, and operating high-availability network infrastructure that supports the ATLAS data acquisition system. You will contribute to monitoring, alerting, and collaboration across LHC experiments.

Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of TCP/IP stack and Ethernet networks.
  • Basic programming skills in Python and Bash.
  • General knowledge of Linux systems.

  • Two years of professional experience since graduation (max).
  • Highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma.
  • No prior CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, test, and operate network infrastructure for the ATLAS DAQ system.
  • Deploy and maintain production-ready network monitoring and alerting for critical DAQ services.

Network Administrator in ATLAS DAQ (EP-ATL-DAQ-2026-228-GRAE)
  • Full-time
  • Compensation: up to CHF 4,687 - monthly

Join the ATLAS Data Acquisition (DAQ) team and contribute to the modernisation of one of the world's most advanced scientific computing networks. Working alongside experienced network engineers, you will gain hands-on experience in the deployment, testing, operation, and monitoring of a high-availability, multi-terabit-per-second network that underpins the ATLAS experiment, while helping to develop future-proof monitoring and alerting solutions in collaboration with experts across CERN and the LHC experiments.

Your responsibilities
  • Participate in the installation, commissioning, testing, and operation of network infrastructure supporting the ATLAS Data Acquisition (DAQ) system.
  • Deploy and maintain a production-ready network monitoring and alerting solution for critical DAQ services and equipment.
  • Collaborate with experts from other LHC experiments to identify common requirements and contribute to the development of scalable, future-proof monitoring solutions.
  • Support the operation and upkeep of the ATLAS TDAQ laboratory, including infrastructure, equipment, and resource management activities.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and evolution of the ATLAS DAQ hardware infrastructure, including server deployment, hardware interventions, and related technical support.
Your profile
  • Basic experience as Sysadmin or Netadmin.
  • Hands-on experience with server and/or switch installations in professional environment.
Skills
  • Basic knowledge of TCP/IP stack and Ethernet networks.
  • Basic programming skills in Python and Bash.
  • General knowledge of Linux systems.
  • Ability to work in teams.
  • Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computing Infrastructures (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree are not eligible.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

This position involves:
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

  • A monthly stipend of 4687 Swiss Francs per month (tax free).
  • 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure.
