Ionic Wind AG is an ETH startup and Empa spin-off developing the world’s first commercial solid-state airflow generators, a disruptive alternative to fans for laptops, edge AI systems and high-precision instruments. Our modules generate airflow by exploiting principles from plasma physics, with no noise, no vibration, and being far more compact than classical fans.
As our product gets closer to market, we are offering a Mechanical Engineering Internship (start date and duration flexible, but as soon as possible) focused on the testing, characterization, integration, and mechanical development of our airflow modules.
Your responsibilities
- Design and execute extensive experimental testing campaigns to characterize the physical performance of our airflow modules, including thermal, fluidic, electrical, mechanical, and environmental parameters
- Analyse, interpret, and present experimental data to identify performance trends, limitations, failure modes, and opportunities for improvement
- Improve our testing infrastructure, including data acquisition systems, sensors, test fixtures, automation software and hardware
- Develop and improve assembly methods for our latest product, with a focus on repeatability, robustness, manufacturability, and longevity
- Conduct material studies and evaluate materials, coatings, adhesives, mechanical components, and manufacturing processes for future product generations
- Perform integration studies to understand how our modules can be incorporated into customer products and thermal systems
- Develop rigorous technical documentation, performance reports and product datasheets
- Work directly on customer projects, from application testing and integration studies to prototype validation
- Document experimental findings to translate them into concrete product design improvements
