Job summary

Roche Basel is offering an internship focused on data and digital tooling to support Operational Excellence. You will gather, clean, and analyze data to quantify key metrics, map current processes, and brainstorm practical digital use cases that improve efficiency.

You’ll translate business needs into technical inputs for tools, prototype lightweight solutions, assist in deploying dashboards, and aid end-user training. 6 months full-time in Basel.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate in a relevant bachelor’s or master’s program.
• Basic hands-on coding experience (Python or JavaScript) and familiarity with VS Code and GitHub.
• Interest in Lean & process mapping with a pragmatic, collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Assist Data Gathering, Cleaning & Analytics Support across phases (Data extraction, cleaning, analysis).
• Support process mapping, gap identification and use-case scoping for digital solutions.
• Translate user needs into technical input for digital tools and support lightweight tool development and deployment.
• Help build data products and pipelines, and assist in end-user training and adoption.

The Opportunity

• 1. Prepare Phase: Data Gathering, Cleaning & Analytics Support
  • Data Extraction & Integration: Support project onboarding by identifying, extracting, and consolidating data from multiple global/local systems (e.g., Hermes, s-LIMS, Snowflake, SAP).
  • Data Cleaning: Structure, clean, and validate raw datasets to establish reliable baselines.
  • Analytics: Perform data analysis to quantify key operational metrics (e.g., Lead Times (LT), cycle times, throughput, and sample/batch test volumes).
• 2. Diagnose & Design Phase: Digital Mapping & Use-Case Scoping
  • Support Process Mapping & Flowcharts: Assist in mapping current-state ("As-Is") operational & digital workflows through shopfloor observations and stakeholder interviews.
  • Gap Identification: Help analyze process workflow analysis to uncover bottlenecks, waste, and performance gaps.
  • Digital Use-Cases: Collaborate with team members to brainstorm and scope practical digital and automation use cases that directly support identified impact levers.
• 3. Implementation Phase: Use-Case Translation, Digital Solutions & Data Setup
  • Requirements Translation: Act as a bridge between business stakeholders and developer teams by translating user pain points and User Requirement Specifications (URS) into clear technical input for digital tools.
  • Lightweight Digital Solutions & Tools: Support the building and testing of lightweight digital solutions or practical digital mockups (e.g., utilizing low-code tools like AppSheets, or exploring agile solution building / "vibe coding" approaches for mockups or solutions).
  • Tool Deployment: Provide hands‑on assistance in rolling out new digital tools and dashboards to end‑users.
  • Data Product & Pipeline Setup: Assist in setting up and structuring data outputs (e.g., data products) and establishing connections between underlying data sources and digital tools.
  • User Training: Support end‑users with onboarding and training to ensure smooth adoption and long‑term project success.

Who You Are

• Academic Background: Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Bachelor's or Master's program in Data/Computer Science, Engineering, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a related field.
• Digital & Data Knowledge: Candidates should have basic hands‑on coding experience (e.g., Python or JavaScript) and be comfortable using tools like VS Code and GitHub, alongside AI‑assisted development (e.g., Claude Code) or low‑code platforms (e.g., AppSheet) to 'vibe code' and rapidly prototype data visualizations, simple digital tools, and functional operational mockups for tool developers.
• Interest in Operational Excellence: Passionate about learning Lean principles, process mapping, and operational problem‑solving within the pharmaceutical industry.
• Hands‑On & Pragmatic Approach: Comfortable engaging with stakeholders across functions (from shop floor operators to IT specialists) and translating business pain points into actionable digital ideas.
• Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to build alignment and serve as an effective bridge between operational business teams and IT/digital functions.
• Languages: Fluent in English (German proficiency is an advantage).
• WIllingness to travel in DACH region

• Location: Basel.
• The position is not suitable for writing a Bachelor/Master thesis.
